Three-star recruit Christian Ross commits to Memphis football over Ole Miss, Mississippi State

Memphis added another recruiting splash Friday as three-star defensive end/receiver Christian Ross committed to the Tigers over offers from Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

Ross made his announcement on television station WDHN surrounded by family and friends in Midland City, Alabama.

Ross had Memphis and both Mississippi schools in his top six choices, revealed July 9 on Twitter. He also had Troy, Tulane and Liberty among his choices and earlier this week, he added an offer from Vanderbilt.

"He's a better young man than anything. He is loved by everyone in the community, teachers, peers," Dale County coach Luke Tucker told The Commercial Appeal. "He's 6-4, 225 pounds. He plays wideout and defensive end and you don't see that often. He's got tremendous ball skills, runs great routs, tough kid. He's a great leader."

According to 247Sports, he is ranked 43rd among players in Alabama.

Ross' coach also has Memphis connections. Luke Tucker was defensive coordinator at Bartlett High School in 2019 and 2020 alongside his brother, head coach Lance Tucker.

With the Tigers having three senior defensive linemen, Ross could add more depth there or be another tall receiver option as the Tigers have just two senior wideouts this season in Gabe Rogers and Eddie Lewis. Memphis has one wide receiver commitment in this class in three-star recruit Kaleb Black and two defensive linemen commitments in Donovan Nevils and Cevan Edwards.

"Wherever the coaches play him will suit him the best. I think he'll play well," Tucker said.

The Tigers' 2023 class, which has 17 total commitments, is ranked 70th. Eight players have yet to be rated by 247Sports which means the rankings could rise in time.
