It’s an especially fun weekend for art enthusiasts in Iowa City.

Thanks to Public Space One, check out a festival of captivating live and video performances all for free. Or, enjoy another downtown art walk organized by the Iowa City Downtown District.

That’s on top of the Iowa Arts Festival this weekend, one of Iowa City's most popular summertime attractions.

Here are three things to do this weekend in Iowa City, including a pair of spots for happy hour and brunch.

Experience an evening of performances at Public Space One

Saturday evening: Public Space One’s fourth annual Open Air Media Festival is the perfect opportunity to see what local and Midwestern artists are creating. Experience an interactive projection installation that makes it seem like you’re planting trees and cleaning up the ocean. Or, bring in a plant so it can be used to generate music. Those are just two examples of the dozens of compelling performances and installations that await at 538 S. Gilbert St. The festival is free to attend and starts at 8:30 p.m. Visit Public Space One’s website to view all the participating artists and learn more about their work.

Hear from an acclaimed writer at the Tuesday Agency

Saturday evening: Pulitzer Prize finalist and writer Luis Alberto Urrea will discuss his new novel, “Good Night, Irene,” at the Tuesday Agency, 404 E. College St. suite 408. Urrea is known for his nonfiction book “The Devil’s Highway” which details a true story of Mexican men crossing the U.S./Mexico border as well as the novel “The Hummingbird’s Daughter,” based on his great-aunt who has been referred to as the Mexican Joan of Arc. The talk will begin at 6:30 p.m. Visit Prairie Lights’ website for information about upcoming author talks.

Go on an art walk across downtown Iowa City

Friday evening: Take yourself on a self-guided tour during another installment of the Iowa City Gallery Walk from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. See photos of nature at Sweets and Treats, acrylic paintings exploring the “theme of violence viewed from places of safety” at Wild Culture Kombucha or pottery at Glassando. Nearly two dozen businesses in Iowa City are participating in the summer gallery walk. Visit Iowa City Downtown District’s website to view all the participating businesses and the work displayed.
