Three Topeka-area girls soccer teams advance to state quarterfinals

Regional soccer action took place this week, beginning on Monday with the final games wrapping up on Friday due to inclement weather throughout the week.

Three teams, two in 4A and one in 6A, would advance to the state quarterfinals that begin on May 24.

Here's how all the Topeka-area girls soccer teams finished at regionals.

4-3-2-1A

Cair Paravel

After a first-round bye, top-seeded Cair Paravel (14-3) would face the No. 8 Bishop Seabury on Thursday for the East Regional #1 title.

Cair Paravel would win 9-0 to advance to the state quarterfinals where they will face No. 4 Hayden (10-6-1) on May 24 at Bettis Sports Park at 4:30.

Hayden

No. 7 Hayden (10-6-1) won its first round matchup over No. 10 Eudora, 3-1, to adcane to the regional finals.

Hayden would capture the East Regional #2 title with a 1-0 upset over No. 2 Louisberg with Sloan Sims scoring the lone goal on an assist from Abby Dodd.

Hayden will face the top seed Cair Paravel (14-3) on May 24 at Bettis Sports Park at 4:30 in a rematch from earlier this season.

5A

Highland Park

Highland Park would win a play-in game as the No. 16 seed over No. 17 FL Schlagle on Monday, 1-0.

They advanced to a first-round matchup with No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas and fell 11-0 to conclude its season with a 3-13 record.

Seaman

No. 8 Seaman (11-5-1) defeated No. 9 Piper in an East Regional #1 opener, 6-2.

Seaman would fall to top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas, 7-0, to end the season in the regional finals.

Shawnee Heights

No. 6 Shawnee Heights won an East Regional #3 thriller against No. 11 Basehor Linwood in double overtime, 4-3, on Monday to advance to the regional finals.

The season ended with a 1-0 loss to No. 3 St. James Academy in the title game to give them a final record of 13-4.

Topeka West 

No. 14 Topeka West (4-12-1) lost a first-round West Regional #3 to conclude its season in a 10-0 loss to No. 3 Maize.

6A

Topeka High

No. 4 seed Topeka High (12-6) defeated No. 13 Wichita Heights on Wednesday, 9-0, to advance to the regional finals.

The season ended in a 2-0 loss to No. 5 Garden City.

Washburn Rural 

No. 1 Washburn Rural advanced to the state quarterfinals with a West Regional #1 title.

First, they defeated No. 16 Free State on Tuesday, 5-0, followed by an 8-0 win over No. 8 Wichita East, 8-0, for the regional title on Friday.

No. 1 Washburn Rural (15-2-1) will host No. 4 Wichita Northwest (10-6-2) on May 24 at 6 p.m.
