CARP LAKE — A three-car crash sent one to the hospital with severe injuries Thursday evening at approximately 5:25 p.m.

The incident happened north of Levering Road in Carp Lake Township and occurred when a 1999 Jaguar was driving southbound and was rear ended by a Toyota Corolla while attempting to turn left, according to Emmet County Sheriff Pete Wallin.

The 70-year-old passenger of the vehicle was then sideswiped by a 2021 Jeep and was subsequently transported to McLaren Northern Michigan in Petoskey for "serious injuries," according to Wallin.

The DNR, Carp Lake and Pellston fire departments, Emmet County EMS and the Emmet County Road Commission all responded and assisted with the incident.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, both northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. 31 were closed following the incident. They have since reopened.

Wallin also stated an investigation into this incident is still ongoing.
