Iron Man came to the rescue in Flint, Mich. on Tuesday evening, aiding firemen who responded to a fire. Three-year-old Isaiah Williams, a superhero fanatic, heard sirens approaching his apartment complex and immediately wanted to help.

“He said to me, ‘I’m a superhero; I have to help.’” his mother, Dominique Williams, said. “So he puts on the suit and says, ‘I’m Iron Man.’”

Williams explained to Isaiah that the firefighters were “big, grown-up superheroes,” who needed to do their job without being disrupted, but the young hero was persistent. As Isaiah and his mother sat on their porch and watched firefighters arrive on the scene at the Evergreen Regency Apartments in the south side of Flint, the 3½-year-old boy had been inspired.

Williams had seen the Iron Man costume at the grocery store about an hour before the firemen arrived at the Evergreen Regency Apartments and decided to surprise her son, a fan of the comic book-turned-movie franchise who already owned a pair of Iron Man sneakers.

“The outfit was an impulse buy,” Williams said. “Best 25 bucks ever.”

After the fire was put out, Williams, a mother of two, brought Isaiah over to meet the firemen. She told the officials that her son revered police officers and firefighters and thought that they, like Iron Man, were superheroes. To her surprise, the firefighters were very friendly, even allowing Isaiah to sit inside the firetruck. Williams snapped a photo that went viral.

Though bashful inside the firetruck, Isaiah enjoyed the experience. When he and his mom got back to their apartment, he told her: “I’m a firefighter — I helped them, I saved people.”

According to a Facebook post by the City of Flint Police Department, “the Flint fire fighters [sic] appreciated his effort!” Fire Chief Raymond Barton said the firemen on the scene allowed Isaiah to help them put the fire hose back on the truck.

Williams said she did not expect the photos and videos she took of Isaiah suited up in the firetruck to receive so much attention. Upon realizing his online fame, Isaiah’s ego inflated, she said. The newly internet famous Isaiah requested cake for breakfast on Wednesday morning, Williams posted on Facebook.

Isaiah has not taken off his costume since Tuesday night despite the fact that it’s now covered with Go-Gurt, Williams said. He toured the fire department early Wednesday afternoon, mask in tow.

“He really thinks he’s a superhero,” Williams said.
