Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman has taken the reins on Disney+ series Zorro.

According to Deadline, he's officially attached as writer, showrunner and executive producer of the streaming reboot, starring Wilmer Valderrama (Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning) as the titular vigilante swordsman.

Cogman's award-winning work across Westeros includes the episodes 'What Is Dead May Never Die' from season 2, 'Oathkeeper' from season 4, and 'Stormborn' from season 7.

18 years on from Zorro's last major onscreen foray - 2005 sequel The Legend of Zorro with Antonio Banderas behind the mask - this serialised effort follows "privileged caballero Diego De La Vega who returns to his hometown of El Pueblo de Los Angeles following a family tragedy.

"There, he discovers a culture of corruption and injustice that will lead him to take on the mantle of the masked vigilante Zorro — America's first true superhero."

It's described as a "bold reimagining" seeped in "humour, sinister intrigue, romantic entanglements and swashbuckling thrills".

Teasing his involvement with the iconic character back in December 2021, when Zorro still didn't have an official home, actor Valderrama said in a statement: "Growing up, Zorro was the one character that made me, as a Latino, feel like I could be a hero. As an adult and a storyteller, I have a responsibility in the stories that I help bring to life.

"To partner with Gary [Marsh, executive producer] and Disney to bring Zorro back into the family after 60 years and be a part of the legacy for other children to know they too can be the heroes of their own stories is a dream come true."
