#ThrowbackThursday: Douglass High School students march in support of new building in 1953

Douglass High School students carry signs asking Oklahoma City area voters to "Complete Douglass," "Vote Yes Dec. 8th" and simply "Vote Yes" during a parade in support of an upcoming school bond issue in 1953. Part of a nearly $3.9 million city-county bond issue for schools, roads and river floodway was a request for $1 million that would mostly go toward completing a new building for Frederick A. Douglass High School. This photo was published in The Daily Oklahoman on Election Day, Dec. 8, 1953, when voters approved the school bond issue that would complete the new high school building, as well as go toward schools at Spencer and Arcadia and target overcrowding at two elementary schools. The first public use of the new Douglass High School was graduation in May 1954.
