More thunder, lightning and rain could rattle Sacramento. Here’s the latest forecast

Sacramento endured episodes of pounding rain this past weekend and meteorologists say more is on the way.

Maybe you were awake early Monday morning and heard the sound of thunder and lightning strike Sacramento — or it startled you awake. Meteorologist Sara Purdue with the National Weather Service said there’s potential for more of the same through at least Wednesday.

A Reddit user took to the r/Sacramento Reddit forum shortly after thunder and lightning started to rattle the area. The resident simply titled the post “Thunder.”

The Sacramento online community assembled, sharing reactions to what it heard — and saw. The post has received 117 comments and 178 “up votes” in the past seven hours.

How much rain fell in Sacramento?

Purdue said downtown Sacramento received 0.6 inches of rain between 8 a.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday, with higher amounts across Sacramento’s suburbs.

According to the weather service, rainfall totals for the Sacramento area include:

  • Sacramento International Airport: 0.69 inches

  • Sacramento Executive Airport: 0.68

  • Elk Grove: 0.66

  • Roseville near Morgan Creek Golf Club: 0.68

  • Rocklin near Rocklin High School: 0.63

  • Citrus Heights, north of Sunrise Mall: 0.52

  • Folsom Lake: 0.36

  • Orangevale: 0.47

  • Foothill Farms: 0.69

  • Rancho Cordova: 0.40

When will it rain again?

You should keep your umbrella and rain boots close.

Purdue said moderate to heavy rain is in the forecast as a low-pressure system makes its way through the region, dropping low tropical moisture in the area.

The result: Warm and wet weather.

By 4 a.m. Thursday, there’s nearly a 100% chance at least an inch of rain will fall across the Sacramento area. There’s a 35% chance of seeing at least 3 inches of rain.

Areas that receive thunderstorms will likely see more intense rain over a short period.

According to the weather service, Monday brings a 100% chance of precipitation to Sacramento, with chances dropping slightly to 90% by nightfall. On Tuesday, the probability rises back to 100% before dropping to 50% on Wednesday.

Meteorologists predict Thursday will bring partly sunny and clear conditions with a high near 62 degrees and a low of 45 degrees.

Rain could return on Friday, according to the weather service.

Winds are forecast to whip throughout the week, between 13 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.
