Thunderstorms moving east; warmer temperatures in Midwest, Northeast: Monday updates

The first week of May brought cooler temperatures across the U.S., but warmer weather will return to the Midwest and Northeast this week.

Meanwhile, the same storms that hit the Midwest and south-central U.S. on Sunday, including Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and western Kentucky, will move eastward on Monday, the National Weather Service said.

Here's what to know about Monday’s weather forecast:

Thunderstorms threaten Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee valleys

The Storm Prediction Center has issued an "enhanced risk" warning of severe thunderstorms over the Middle Mississippi Valley through Monday morning. The Weather Prediction Center issued a "slight risk" of excessive rainfall over the Middle Mississippi/Ohio valleys and the Ohio/Tennessee valleys.

Springfield, Missouri, and Cincinnati, Ohio, residents should be on the lookout for thunderstorms, which could produce heavy rain, damaging winds and hail, AccuWeather senior meteorologist Courtney Travis said.

Warmer weather in Midwest and Northeast including in Cincinnati and Washington, DC

Temperatures will return to historical averages in some Midwest and Northeast states Monday. Cincinnati and Washington, D.C., residents may get even higher temperatures this week.

"Temperatures in Cincinnati finally rose back into the 70s this weekend and may even make a run at 80 degrees later this week," AccuWeather Meteorologist Thomas Geiger said.

Typical Cincinnati weather during this time of the year is high around 72 degrees. The city reaches 80 degrees around June.

Washington, D.C., which had eight days above 80 degrees in April, will likely get back to the 80s for the first time since April 21, Geiger said.

New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia will also see higher temperatures starting Monday as the weather gets warmer towards the end of the week.
