Thunderstorms and winter weather in Northern California: More rain and snow on the way

Sacramento is kicking off the first full week of November and the end of daylight saving time with a persistent autumnal rain.

Sunday’s showers brought less than a tenth of an inch to the area, Idamis Shoemaker, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. And more is coming.

Residents awoke Monday morning to rain, and the weather service forecast potential thunderstorms after 10 a.m. on with wind gusts as high as 18 mph. At night, there’s a 50% chance of rain before 4 a.m. with gusts up to 20 mph. New rainfall totals are expected at a tenth to a quarter of an inch for Monday night, Shoemaker said. However, totals may increase if there are thunderstorms.

Showers will linger throughout Monday and into Tuesday, Shoemaker said, with the heaviest rainfall to start the week. She advises people to practice standard rain safety measures, including slowing down on wet roads and using headlights.

In the northern Sierra Nevada and Lassen Park region, the service issued a winter weather advisory from Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday. Three to five inches of snow above 6500 feet is expected in this area, including Tahoe, and gusts are forecast to go as high as 45 mph.

Less than half an inch of snow fell at the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab, near Donner Pass, in the last seven days. There’s a chance of snow throughout the week in Truckee and South Lake Tahoe.
