From veterans pulling out wins to advance, to newcomers impressing in their BNP Paribas Open debut, here is a rundown of some of Thursday's action at the BNP Paribas Open:

Andy Murray vs. Tomas Martin Etcheverry: It took Murray three hours and 12 minutes, but the three-time Grand Slam champion advanced Thursday with a 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-4 win on Stadium Court. The 35-year-old from Great Britain is now 7-0 this year in decisive sets.

Without Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer here at Indian Wells, Murray is the lone member of what was once The Big Four in men's tennis. He's also the only one of the four who has not won a title at Indian Wells. The other three have combined for 13.

Murray will look to take another step toward remedying that Saturday versus Pablo Carreño Busta of Spain.

"I want to keep going," Murray said. "I still feel extremely motivated. I still enjoy the competition."

Danielle Collins vs. Dalma Galfi: From the first points of the first game of her match Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open, Danielle Collins battled both her own game and her opponent, Dalma Galfi.

In the end, Collins couldn’t overcome a balky serve and the tenacity of Galfi as the American fell 6-4, 6-4 in the first match on Stadium 1 for the day. While the loss eliminated one American from the women’s field of the Indian Wells tournament, it advanced Galfi to a second-round match against fifth-seed Carolina Garcia of France.

For Collins, who was ranked as high as No. 7 in the WTA rankings as recently as last July, the first-round loss at the BNP is another disappointing result. Entering the week 31st in the world and unseeded in the Indian Wells tournament, Collins immediately fell when Galfi broke her serve in the third game of the first set.

From there, Collins tried to play catchup with the Hungarian star, but Collins managed to put just 37 percent of her first serves in play in the set and double faulted three times.

The second set wasn’t much better, though Galfi, ranked 80th, fell behind 2-4 in the set. But Collins continued to struggle with inconsistency and Galfi won the final four games, including a break after being 0-40 down to take a 5-4 lead.

Stan Wawrinka vs. Aleksandar Vukic: In a men’s first-round match, three-time Grand Slam winner but now the 100th-ranked player in the world Stan Wawrinka struggled with qualifier Vukic but came away with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victory.

Wawrinka played just 22 matches in 2022 as he continued to recover from a 2021 foot injury that required multiple surgeries. Wawrinka has been ranked as high as No. 3, most recently in 2016.

Ben Shelton vs. Fabio Fognini: Wawrinka’s win on Stadium 2 was followed by a 6-4, 6-1 victory for American Ben Shelton over Fabio Fognini of Italy. Shelton, just 20 but ranked 41st in the world, was in control in the first set and dominated the second set for the victory. Shelton’s reward for the first-round victory is a second-round match with defending BNP Paribas Open champion Taylor Fritz which will happen on Saturday, no doubt on Stadium 1.

Dominic Thiem vs. Adrian Mannarino: In his first Indian Wells match since winning the 2019 BNP Paribas Open title, Thiem came from down a break in the third set to force a tiebreak but could not outlast Adrian Mannarino of France inside Stadium 2. Mannarino came from down two points in the tiebreak to win, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5).

It was a big performance for Mannarino, who pumped his first and shouted immediately following the final point in a match that lasted nearly three hours.

Theim, 29, has fallen to No. 102 in the world in large part due to injuries since his breakthrough season in 2019. He followed that year up with a U.S. Open title in 2020, but a wrist injury sidelined him for much of 2021 and he has struggled to get back to form.

Mannnarino takes the court again on Saturday versus Italy's Lorenzo Musetti.

Desirae Krawczyk update: The Rancho Mirage native and Palm Desert High School grad, who has won four Grand Slam mixed doubles titles, is looking for her first Indian Wells doubles title and she and Demi Schuurs took one step closer to doing that Thursday. The doubles pair won their first match at Indian Wells, 7-5, 6-3, over Karolina Plíšková and Petra Petra Martić.

Krawczyk and Schuurs, who lost their second match together last year at Indian Wells, will play again on Saturday or Sunday versus a pairing to be determined.
