The Jacksonville Police Department is investigating a vehicle crash that left one dead last week.

At 1:18 p.m. on Thursday, a 2016 Ford F-150 pickup truck operated by 77-year-old Rudolf Batts was traveling south in the center lane of Western Boulevard and entered the intersection of Memorial Drive on a red traffic signal, according to a Monday morning news release from JPD.

The release said the driver of a 2003 Toyota Corolla, 81-year-old Ruth Jackman Paquin, was traveling east on Memorial Drive and proceeded straight into the intersection of NC Highway 53 (Western Boulevard) on a green traffic signal. Her sedan was then struck on the left side by Batt's truck.

Jacksonville Fire and Emergency Services successfully extricated Paquin from the vehicle and transported her to Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune where she was treated. However, the release said that hours later, Paquin succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Next of kin has been notified and the release said JPD extends its condolences to the family and friends of Paquin.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with additional information regarding this incident is asked to contact Corporal William Hollis at 910-938-6454 or via email at whollis@jacksonvillenc.gov.
