Thursday roundup: Hoover, Jackson girls tennis to be well represented at state tournament

AKRON — A large contingent of North Canton Hoover and Jackson girls tennis players will head to Mason next weekend for the state tournament.

The Vikings and Polar Bears qualified Thursday by advancing to the semifinals of the Division I district tournament at Springside Athletic Club.

The Jackson doubles team of seniors Madison Altman and Paige Reese advanced to its fourth straight state tournament while Hoover junior Tess Bucher advanced to her third straight in singles.

They will be joined at the Lindner Family Tennis Center by the Vikings doubles team of senior Cecilia Holben and junior Bridget Fink and another Jackson doubles team: junior Addyson Utterback and senior Divya Shanmugan.

The top six singles players and top six doubles teams advance to state from the Northeast Ohio Division I district.

Hoover can make it five girls to state if the doubles team of seniors Angelina Koinoglou and Claire Wood wins its consolation bracket match on Saturday and gets to the fifth-place match. Koinoglou qualified to state last year in doubles with the now-graduated Izzy Warburton.

Bucher, who finished fourth at state the past two years, beat Walsh Jesuit senior Rachael McHale 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and Rocky River senior Samantha Robertson 6-1, 6-1 in the second round on Thursday. She next faces Avon junior Natalie Smitek, who beat Bucher's teammate, freshman Ema Papcke, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round.

Hoover's Addison Sheil, another freshman, lost her opening match 6-0, 6-0 to Magnificat freshman Anna Bennett. Green senior Evie Pryor lost in the first round to Revere's Maddie Kavenagh 6-1, 6-2.

Altman and Reese swept their way to the semifinals with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins against Solon's Lindsay Lebowitz and Elyssa Schwartz and Highland's Sarah Sgambati and Madison Pawlak. They next face Holben and Fink in a rematch of a sectional semifinal, won 6-2, 6-4 last week by Altman and Reese on their way to a sectional championship. Holben and Fink beat Brecksville's Cat Iltchev and Claire Martens 6-2, 7-6 in the first round and Westlake's Stella Davisson and Mackenzie Stokes 6-1, 6-0 in the second round on Thursday.

Utterback and Shanmugan (the No. 4 seed from the Canton sectional) knocked off the Springside sectional's No. 1 seed, Bhavya Anoop and Delia Guzic of Strongsville, 7-6, 6-4 in the first round. They then beat Avon's Amelia Tomak and Julia Kacenjar 7-5, 6-0 in the second round to punch their ticket to state.

Tomak and Kacenjar is the team Koinoglou and Wood will face in Saturday's consolation match.

Koinoglou and Wood beat Shaker Heights' Ruth Wilson and Alexis Glinzer 6-1, 6-1 in the first round, then lost to Elyria sectional No. 1 seed Caroline Moritz and Anna Mancino of Magnificat 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 in the second round. Moritz and Mancino face Utterback and Shanmugan in the semifinals Saturday.

The first two rounds of the Division II district tournament will take place Friday at Springside.
