Thursday sports roundup: Gerhard pin lets WHS edge PA wrestlers. 39-37

Worthington 39, Pipestone Area 37

PIPESTONE — The Worthington Trojan varsity wrestling team was trailing Pipestone Area 33-37 when senior heavyweight Kasey Gerhard took his place in the center circle. Gerhard came through, pinning his opponent, Valentin Barrios, to secure a marquee Worthington victory.

The match started off with a 14-4 major decision for the Arrows as Carloseriel Perez-Garcia out-grappled Trojan eighth-grader Saul Galvez for a 4-0 Pipestone lead.

The Trojans' Alex Galvez and Mason Schutz secured six points each via Pipestone forfeits in the 113 and 195 weight classes, and Pipestone won by forfeit in the 126 and 132 weight categories.

Oscar Galvez earned six points for the Trojans by pinning his opponent, Ritch Sobrecary, in the 138-pound weight class. Teammate Ethan Meyer followed up with a 5-3 decision over Davis Budden at 145. Moo Bleh earned the Trojans another pin victory at 152, defeating Gavin Olson.

Pipestone Area took a late lead due to excellent performances from several of their middle-weight wrestlers. Bode Bruns grappled Levi Henning for an Arrow pin at 160 pounds, Jackson Melcher pinned Evan Neuberger at 182, and Aiden Voss pinned Trojan junior Mu Shee at 220.

Winning for the Trojans in the 170 pound weight class was sophomore Chase Byrne, who clipped opponent Lucas Thooft to the mat in 1:27.

WINDOM — Jackson County Central freshman Roman Voss scored 34 points for the Huskies in a high-scoring Big South Conference game against the Windom Area Eagles.

The Huskies had four players score double digit points. Erik Hesebeck dropped 17. Travis Rogotzke and Weston Rowe both added 15.

Voss was effective from the free throw line, connecting on 10 of 13 attempts.

Henry Erickson scored 35 for the Eagles and Drew Rothenberger scored 15. Abraham McKibbin and Josh Garrison added 11.

EDGERTON — Two days after beating a strong Windom Area team, Westbrook-Walnut Grove came right back to take on another strong rival, Southwest Minnesota Christian.

This time the game didn't go the Chargers' way.

"They're gonna be a good team again," said W-WG coach Derrick Jenniges about the tall, talented Eagles. "You're going to have to play pretty clean to beat 'em."

Southwest scored the first six points of the contest. W-WG took the lead when the scores reached the 20s, but that's when Kole Curry drew his third foul.

Curry finished with 12 points for the Chargers, and teammate Hudson Jenniges had 13.

Jacob Uilk had 17 for Southwest Christian and Dawson Rieck added 16.

The game was tight near the end of the game, but the Eagles went on a late run to clinch the win.

LAMBERTON — Ashton Juhnke scored 23 points, six 3-pointers, six rebounds and 4 assists to lead Red Rock Central to a victory over Adrian/ Ellsworth. Isaac Simonson finished with 15 points, 20 rebounds, eight assists and five blocks. Jayden Lang had 15 points and four assists. Corey Arkell ended with 14 points, 5 blocks and four rebounds.

A/E's Aiden Tweet scored 25 points and Brock Henning had 18 points.

Girls Basketball

JCC 64, MCWest 59

TRIMONT — Maci Farmer did everything but sell buttered popcorn in Jackson County Central's game with Martin County West. The senior guard tallied 32 points with 10 rebounds and 10 steals. She was 13-for-16 at the free throw line.

Rylie Cother scored 21 points with six steals, six rebounds and five assists for the Huskies.

Emily Anderson had 24 points for Martin County West.

Boys Hockey

Waseca 4, Windom Area 0

WASECA — The Waseca Bluejays earned a shutout victory against the Windom Area Eagles on Home ice.

Waseca improves on its hot start in the Big South Conference going 4-1 and leads all teams in points with 8. Waseca will travel for their next game on Tuesday, December 13th to face a tough New Ulm Eagles team.

With the loss, Windom Area evens its record on the year to 2-2, and will play host on Saturday December 10th to out of conference opponent Becker/Big Lake.
