BOYS BASKETBALL

DIVISION 1 SECTIONAL SEMIFINALS

NEENAH 66, KIMBERLY 64

KAUKAUNA – His nickname is “Ice” and that’s exactly what Chevalier Emery Jr. had in his veins Thursday night.

Emery Jr. nailed a contested 3-pointer from the corner as time expired to lift the Rockets over Kimberly and propel them to a WIAA Division 1 sectional final against Eau Claire Memorial.

“I told my guys just get me the ball, I’ll bring us home,” Emery Jr. “I always believe in them and they believe in me as well and they said ‘Ice, you gotta make this.’

“I got a screen, went to the corner and just let it go. It was one of those driveway-as-a-kid kind of dream shots.”

The Rockets face the Old Abes for a state berth at 1 p.m. Saturday at D.C. Everest High School.

Neenah had a pair of turnovers within the last minute that led to a bucket from Kimberly’s Jackson Paveletzke and a pair of free throws for a 64-63 lead.

Neenah's Chevalier Emery Jr., who made a 3-point shot at the buzzer, reacts to the Rockets' win over Kimberly in a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal game in Kaukauna on Thursday.

Neenah took a time out with 3.1 seconds left on the ensuing possession to set up the final play.

Neenah coach Lee Rabas said the first option was to go to post player JJ Paider, but that a screen wasn’t set which led to Emery Jr.’s 3-pointer.

“At first I thought they might have blocked it and he was really close,” Emery Jr. said of his final shot. “But when I let it go it looked online and I told myself it was good.”

Emery Jr. had 17 points for Neenah (26-1), with Carter Thomas leading the team with 19 points. Paider added 12 for the Rockets.

Rabas added that he understood the frustration in Kimberly’s case, with the Papermakers losing all three of its games this season to the Rockets by a combined four points.

“Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. We’re fortunate,” Rabas said. “I’m sure they’re sitting on the other side – ‘we lost 3 games by 4 points’ - that’s hard to swallow. Beating somebody of that caliber three times …. But we got to keep going.”

Kimberly coach Jon Murphy said that he and his team did “everything we needed to do to put ourselves in position to win.”

“I mean (Chevalier) hit a really tough shot from the corner,” Murphy said. “He didn’t have a great look and had somebody in his face … the kid made a play and it was one of those games where the team with the last possession found a way to win. That hurts.”

Paveletzke had an outstanding game for Kimberly, finishing with 32 points.

“These kids surpassed a lot of people’s expectations,” Murphy said. “Coming in we had nothing but the two guards – nobody else had played a second. But I’m proud of their effort. It just didn’t go our way tonight.”

Rabas knows that his team has a big challenge with Eau Claire Memorial on Saturday.

“I know they’re super talented and they have two or three top guys,” he said. “And we know Appleton East is a good team, so for (Eau Claire Memorial) to beat them we know we’ll have our hands full. The FVA tournament is over so we have to play someone else.”
