Thursday's H.S. roundup: Somers rallies for softball win; Coventry baseball earns Class S tourney berth

May 5—Somers High found itself trailing 3-0 early in Thursday's non-conference game against Valley Regional.

No problem.

Addison Powell and Laura Catellier each had two-run doubles and Grace Chagnon provided the defensive play of the game, throwing out a runner at second base to end things as Somers held on for a 7-5 home victory.

Somers' Aubrie Kobjack (single) and Robin Gaskell (infield out) each drove in runs in the third before Powell delivered with two outs to score Kiana Kalman and Catellier for a 4-3 lead.

Kalman added a run-scoring single in the fourth to make it 5-3 before Catellier delivered with two outs to put Somers ahead 7-3. Things stayed that way until the seventh as the Warriors (5-8) made things interesting for Somers (9-4).

Raegan Wyrebek-Brasky singled with two outs and an outfield error pulled Valley Regional within 7-4. Amelia Giantonio followed with a RBI single to right. As she attempted to stretch the hit into a double, Changon threw a strike to Kalman to second for the final out.

Hailey Schafer went the distance to pick up the win, striking out five.

NORWICH FREE ACADEMY 4, RHAM 2. In Norwich, Hadley Marchand homered for RHAM in its non-conference loss.

The Raptors (8-4) scored their runs in the fifth. Ashlee Perkins singled and Marchand hit a two-out, two-run homer to center that gave RHAM a 2-1 lead.

NFA (10-3) answered with three runs in the fifth to retake the lead, the go-ahead runs scoring on an outfield error.

Natalie Assunto and Mya Strumskas each had two hits for RHAM. Marchand threw a complete game allowing eight hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

COVENTRY 4, MIDDLETOWN 2. In Middletown, CeCe Gardner broke a 2-2 tie with a RBI single in the fifth and Coventry added insurance in the sixth to remain unbeaten.

Elizabeth Mitchell led off the fifth for the Patriots (13-0) with a single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Remy Casida. Angelina Virtuli recorded the next two outs in the circle for the Blue Dragons (7-6) before Gardner's infield hit brought home Mitchell to give Coventry a 3-2 lead.

And in the sixth, the Patriots added to their lead on Mitchell's sacrifice fly to bring home Julia Boya, who reached on a leadoff double.

Boya and Charlotte Wesoloskie drew back-to-back walks with two outs in the third to open the scoring. Middletown answered with two runs in the home half.

Mitchell struck out 10 without a walk and allowed four hits.

SUFFIELD 12, WINDSOR LOCKS 7. In Suffield, Lizzy Jamrog hit two doubles and a grand slam for five RBIs, leading the Wildcats (4-10) to the NCCC win.

Kiley Connors and Bella Canon each had two hits and two RBIs for the visiting Raiders (2-10).

STAFFORD 24, EAST GRANBY 11. In East Granby, Ashley Toney went 3-for-6, including two home runs with four RBIs, and Ava Marossie doubled and tripled to drive in two runs as the Bulldogs rolled to the NCCC victory.

Stafford (4-6) five runs in the first, three in the second, six in the third and four in the fourth.

Jaelyn Moulton also had a big day at the plate for the winners with three hits and six RBIs.

TOLLAND 13, EAST CATHOLIC 5. In Tolland, Elsie McCaffrey struck out 16 and stole four bases for the Eagles in the CCC interdivisional victory,

Caylin Blazys added three hits for Tolland (10-2), which scored five runs in the first, two in the second and three in the third to build a 10-2 lead.

East Catholic is 3-9.

BASEBALL

COVENTRY 13, EAST GRANBY 0. The Coventry High baseball team wrapped up another Class S state tournament berth on Thursday.

Gavin Covell had three hits and scored four runs with an RBI and Evan Menzel had two hits with three RBIs as the host Patriots rolled to a five-inning NCCC win over East Granby.

Jacob Wojtkowiak had two hits and scored three runs for the Patriots (8-3). Coventry broke out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning and led 5-1 after two.

After the Crusaders (5-6) scored twice in the third to pull within 5-3, the hosts added three runs in the third and four more in the fourth.

Brandon White picked up the win in relief for Coventry, allowing two hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

WETHERSFIELD 10, RHAM 1. Wednesday in Wethersfield, RHAM lost a CCC interdivisonal game. Wethersfield (6-4) was held to seven hits, but took advantage of five errors by RHAM (7-4).

RHAM starter Fayz Baig gave up nine runs, four earned, in four innings, allowing five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Wethersfield starter Justin Bagdasarian went the distance, giving up one unearned run and six hits.

GIRLS LACROSSE

MERCY 9, RHAM 8 (OT). In Hebron, Mackenzie Kelley scored with 8.7 seconds in the first overtime Thursday to lift the Tigers.

Ciara Murray scored four goals and had one assist for the Raptors (5-5) while Diana Zito added two goals and three assists and Grace Schadtle had two assists.

Kylie Aldridge made nine saves for RHAM.

Mercy improved to 3-7.

CANTON 14, ELLINGTON 6. In Ellington, Katlyn Boone and Katie Hurlburt each scored two goals as the Knights dropped the NCCC game.

Carly Diwinsky and Kelsey Harnois each scored a goal for Ellington (6-4). Nora Miller made four saves.

Gabby Delsanto had six goals to lead the Warriors (9-2), who led 6-2 at halftime.
