Thursday's high school boys' roundup: Portland shuts out Cheverus, 2-0
Oct. 14—Nico Millones scored in the first half and Ollie Hettenbach added a goal in the second half as Portland blanked Cheverus, 2-0, in a Class A South boys' soccer match Thursday evening at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
Hettenbach set up the first goal on a cross that was deflected to Millones, who beat Stags keeper Luke McNabb.
Hettenbach's goal in the second half came on a shot that deflected off a defender and into the net.
Ben Littell made two saves for the Bulldogs (8-5), who entered the game ranked ninth in Class A Heal points. McNabb finished with five saves for Cheverus (5-5-3).
At halftime, Portland honored its first varsity team from 1972.
WAYNFLETE 6, TRAIP ACADEMY 3: Myles Culley scored three goals and broke Waynflete's single-season record, pacing the Flyers (10-1-1) to a win over Rangers (10-3) in Kittery.
Culley now has 31 goals, eclipsing the mark of 28 set by Ed Flowerdew in 1993.
Nils Burton-Johanson, Jacob Woodman and Liam Anderson also scored for the Flyers.
Quinn Alessi, Aiden Disalvo and Giacomo Peyron each tallied a goal for Traip.
NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 1, ST. DOMINIC 0: An own goal with 15:33 remaining enabled the Panthers (7-6) to beat the Saints (3-8-1) in Auburn.
A shot by Rodgers Crowley caromed off St. Dom's goalie Riley Daigle, then bounced off a defender and into the net.
Daigle finished with 12 saves. NYA keeper Tanner Anctil turned aside five shots.
FOOTBALL
SANFORD 20, MARSHWOOD 7: Jordan Bissonnette had a pair of 2-yard scoring runs and added a touchdown pass as the Spartans (4-3) defeated the Hawks (2-5) in South Berwick.
Bissonnette's first TD, in the first quarter, gave Sanford a 7-0 halftime lead. He made it 14-0 with a touchdown run on the Spartans' first possession of the second half.
Alex Sevigny's 15-yard touchdown catch extended the lead to 20-0 before Ty Cougler broke a 80-yard run to get Marshwood on the board.
MDI 56, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 22: Mikey Ryan rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another, but the Patriots (2-4) lost to the Trojans (4-2) in Bar Harbor.
After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, Gray-New Gloucester scored on a 60-yard run by Ryan. Alex Henry added a field goal in the second quarter.
After a long return by Brady Castrucci and a pass from Ryan to Kobi Conant, Ryan ran in a 12-yard score, and the Trojans' lead was 28-16 at halftime.
MDI added a couple touchdowns in the third quarter to pull ahead 44-16. A fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Ryan to Conant cut the deficit to 44-22 with 9:04 remaining, but that was as close as the Patriots got.
