Thursday's high school roundup: Brunswick hires Kaili Phillips as athletic director

May 11—Kaili Phillips has been approved as the new athletic director at Brunswick High after a unanimous vote by the town's school board on Wednesday.

Phillips will replace Aaron Watson, who is resigning after two years as the AD. She'll be the first woman to serve in the position.

A 2006 graduate of the University of Maine, Phillips was captain of the Black Bears' volleyball team and a two-time all-conference selection. She founded Brunswick High's volleyball program in 2016 and coached the team to the playoffs in its first three seasons before leaving the program in 2020.

Phillips currently is an assistant principal at Mt. Ararat Middle School in Topsham, and previously was a teacher at Thornton Academy and Biddeford High. She starts the new post on July 1.

BASEBALL

SCARBOROUGH 6, NOBLE 2: Erik Swenson and Tyler Archambault combined on a no-hitter as the Red Storm (6-1) defeated the Knights (4-4) in Scarborough.

Swenson allowed two runs in the first inning but held Noble hitless until the seventh, when Archambault finished off the victory.

Mason Porter hit a two-run homer in third inning, when Scarborough turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead.. Porter, Ashton Blanchette, Matthew Fallona and Lewis Moynihan all had two hits.

THORNTON ACADEMY 11, MASSABESIC 1: Brayden Williams was 4 for 4 with a double and three RBI, leading the Golden Trojans (4-5) past the Mustangs (4-3) in a six-inning game at Saco.

Josh Kopetski added two hits, and Andrew Thibodeau drove two runs. Jack Nussbaum pitched a four-hitter.

Bryden Marcotte got two hits for Massabesic.

BIDDEFORD 6, WESTBROOK 4: Landon Sirois drove in two runs with a pair of hits, and the Tigers (4-4) got three runs in the first inning and three in the fifth to beat the Blue Blazes (3-5) at Biddeford.

Gino Mariello went six innings on the mound for the Tigers, allowing four runs on six hits. Dom Smith picked up the save with a hitless seventh.

Alex Bean and Ryan Stone each had two hits for Westbrook.

FALMOUTH 10, PORTLAND 0: Peyton Mitchell went 3 for 3 with three RBI to pace the Navigators (6-1), who scored seven runs in the sixth to pull away from the Bulldogs (1-7) in Falmouth.

Eli Cowperthwaite pitched a three-hitter, striking out 11 and walking one.

Henry Bibeau had a double for Portland.

KENNEBUNK 8, BONNY EAGLE 6: James DiGiovanni tied the game with an RBI single in the sixth inning and Max Andrews drew a bases-loaded walk to force home the go-ahead run as the Rams (4-5) rallied past the Scots (2-6) in Kennebunk.

Isaac Jensen made it 8-6 with a sacrifice fly.

DiGiovanni led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run.

Ryan Berry had three hits for Bonny Eagle.

SOUTH PORTLAND 12, CHEVERUS 0: Andrew Heffernan threw a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double, leading Red Riots (6-2) to six-inning win over the Stags (6-2) in Portland.

Nolan Hobbs went 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI. Richie Gilboy and Hudson Iacuessa each scored three times.

MARSHWOOD 10, DEERING 0: The Hawks (6-2) took control with a six-run third inning and shut out the Rams (0-7) in South Berwick.

Noah Fitzgerald hit two doubles and scored twice. Ronan Garrett pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk.

GORHAM 10, SANFORD 4: Mason Frink had three hits and four RBI for the Rams (4-3) as they beat the Spartans (4-4) in Gorham.

Gorham collected 16 hits, including three by Quinn Dillon, who scored three runs.

Ben Gill had two hits for Sanford.

OCEANSIDE 6, WINSLOW 2: Gavin Ripley struck out 11 as the Mariners (5-2) beat the Black Raiders (0-8) in Winslow.

Ripley walked one and allowed four hits in a complete game.

Alex Bartlett led Oceanside's offense with three hits.

Tyler Meadow had two hits for Winslow.

DIRIGO 7, BOOTHBAY/WISCASSET 6: The Cougars (4-1) rallied from a 6-1 deficit with two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to beat Boothbay/Wiscasset (0-6) in Boothbay Harbor.

Freshman Trevor Crosby led Dirigo with four hits and two RBI. Dakota Tompkins, Dylen Packard, Travis Wright and Ethan Olsen also drove in runs.

Tompkins and Charlie Houghton split the pitching duties for the Cougars, who scored in the top of the first, then fell behind as Boothbay/Wiscasset got three in the bottom half, one in the second and two in the third.

SOFTBALL

SOUTH PORTLAND/WESTBROOK 15, CHEVERUS 5: Delanie Whitten went 4 for 4, scored three times and drove in two runs as the Red Riots (8-2) defeated the Stags (4-4) in five innings at Portland.

Ella Nickerson, Andrea DiMauro and Rachel DiMauro all had three hits, including a home run by Rachel DiMauro.

Ashley Connors and Kelsey Cassidy got two hits for Cheverus.

SACOPEE VALLEY 19, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 9: Brianna Eastman was 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBI for the Hawks (6-3), who took the lead for good with an eight-run third inning against the Seagulls (2-8) in Hiram.

Julia Tuthill also had three hits.

Summer St. Louis hit a two-run homer and a single for OOB.

MARANACOOK SWEEPS TRAIP: Alissa Michaud scored four runs and drove in four as Maranacook (7-2) finished a doubleheader sweep against Traip Academy (0-8) with a 26-5 win in Readfield.

Phoebe Bell had three hits, three runs and three RBI. Allie LaBelle, Paige Magee and Anna Reay added two hits apiece.

In the opener, Shylah Woodford was 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBI in Maranacook's 10-1 victory. LaBelle and Annabelle Brann each contributed two hits, and LaBelle threw a two-hitter.

Hannah Thorston and Noelle French got the hits for Traip in Game 1. Julie Leyden led the Rangers with two hits in the second game.

GIRLS' LACROSSE

THORNTON ACADEMY 11, WELLS 7: Morgan Bolduc scored six goals and set up two as the Golden Trojans (5-3) beat the Warriors (6-2) in Saco.

Amelia Benoit and Natalie Hilton each chipped in with a pair of goals. Emma Boissoneault also scored for the Trojans.

Summer Sullivan and Anna Woodward tallied three goals for Wells. Alyssa Robie got the other.

MARSHWOOD 15, NOBLE 3: Izzy Young powered the Hawks (5-2) with five goals and an assist as they defeated the Knights (2-6) in South Berwick.

Sarah Theriault contributed four goals and two assists, Lindley Gori had three goals and one assist, and Maddy Poitras, Maeve Long and Addie Beale also scored.

Ashley Merchant tallied two goals for Noble. Isabella Costello got the other.

Lauren Walker stopped eight shots for Marshwood, while Noble's Tianna Nash made six saves.

LINCOLN ACADEMY 11, OCEANSIDE 7: Marley LeBel scored six goals — five in the second half — as the Eagles (5-1) pulled away from the Mariners (2-4) in Rockland.

Mariam DeLisle netted three first-half goals to help Lincoln lead 5-3 at halftime. Zofie Day and Abby Kopp also scored for the Eagles, and Hunter Gilmore made nine saves.

Lily Stockpole paced Oceanside with four goals. Emma Morrison stopped 19 shots.
