BOYS BASKETBALL

NEENAH 83, KIMBERLY 82

KIMBERLY - Chevalier Emery Jr.’s layup with 7.1 seconds remaining in overtime was the winning basket for the Rockets in a Fox Valley Association victory over the Papermakers.

After Emery Jr.’s basket and a timeout, the Papermakers inbounded and got the ball to Jackson Paveletzke, who dribbled almost the length of the court. Neenah, which had fouls to give, looked like it was trying to foul Paveletzke but no call was made and Paveletzke’s layup at the buzzer bounced off the rim as the Rockets held on.

With the win, Neenah improves to 20-1 overall and 14-1 in the FVA. Kimberly falls to 14-7 overall and 12-3 in the FVA. The Rockets have a two-game lead for the conference title with three games remaining.

“We know we’re a great team and we know they’re a great team, so that’s a big win for us,” Emery Jr. said. “We just want to keep getting better every single day. That was a really big win for us.”

Neenah led by 13 points at halftime and pushed the lead to 17 in the second half before Kimberly rallied, spurred by a defensive switch from man-to-man to zone.

“We didn’t fold when they made a run at us,” Neenah coach Lee Rabas said. “We made enough plays to get the W.

“If you’re going to be a great team and have a special season, sometimes you gotta win ugly.”

Emery Jr. led Neenah with 28 points. JJ Paider added 22 points and 22 rebounds, and Carter Thomas scored 15 points.

Paveletzke scored 46 points for Kimberly, including 26 in the second half. In the second half, he passed Maddy Schreiber as the all-time leading scorer in school history for boys or girls.
