Thursday's Top Prep Performers: Baseball leagues crown five champions

Highlights from Thursday in high school sports:

BASEBALL

  • Moorpark and Royal each won their league finales and finished as Coastal Canyon League co-champions. Danny Orozco went 3 for 5 with a triple and six RBIs, Ethan Gonzalez was 3 for 5 with an RBI, Landon Gaz was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Michael Ziemkowski went 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Kyle Muniz and Zach Serup each had a hit and an RBI as the Musketeers defeated Camarillo 13-7. Moorpark (17-9-1, 9-3) earned the league's top seed for the playoffs after winning the season series against Royal. Evan DeVally went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs, Nate Hamburger hit a solo homer and made a key diving catch in the field, Matt O'Brien allowed three runs in six innings, and Noah Onoye earned the save to lead the Highlanders (19-5, 9-3) to a 4-3 win over third-place Simi Valley (14-3, 7-5).

  • In a wild final week in the Marmonte League, Agoura, Calabasas and Oaks Christian finished as tri-champions — thanks to a remarkable effort by the Chargers. Agoura capped an improbable run to a share of the title by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Calabasas 8-6 on Thursday. The Chargers (16-12, 9-6) beat the Coyotes (19-9, 9-6) on Monday, Wednesday and then Thursday to end up as the league's top seed for the CIF-SS playoffs. Calabasas will be the second seed after earning a share of the league title for the first time since 2018. Gaelan Mendoza pitched six shutout innings, Thomas Farmer had a double and Royce Clayton Jr. and Tommy Farmer had hits for Oaks Christian in its 1-0 loss to Westlake. Despite the defeat, the Lions (16-11, 9-6) earned a piece of their first Marmonte title and will be the league's third seed for the playoffs.

  • James Guyette pitched a six-hit shutout with eight strikeouts, Cade Falsken had a double, Tyler Field had an RBI, and Jake Trickle and Max Amador each had hits to lead Newbury Park (18-10, 7-8) to a 1-0 victory over Thousand Oaks (14-12, 7-8) in a Marmonte League finale.

  • Mason Reid pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts and went 2 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI at the plate and Zack Day was 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead Tri-Valley League champion Grace Brethren (14-9, 8-0) to a 5-1 win over St. Bonaventure.

  • Fillmore (11-14, 7-8) rallied from an 8-1 deficit to defeat Santa Paula in a Citrus Coast League finale. Anthony Cuevas finished 5 for 5 with two RBIs and Tyler Antwine had a double and two RBIs for the league champion Cardinals (14-9-1, 12-3).

SOFTBALL

  • Leah Cowans went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Natalie Yamane was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Rylee Pinedo finished 2 for 4 with an RBI, Justice Flores had a double and two RBIs, Ainsley Berlingeri struck out seven in three shutout innings, and Ava Tepesano struck out four in four scoreless innings to lead Coastal Canyon League champion Camarillo (22-3) to a 5-0 win over Citrus Coast League champion Santa Paula (14-11-1) in a nonleague regular-season finale.

  • Nadia Collins finished 4 for 4 with a double and two stolen bases, Joie Steinkamp went 3 for 4 with a homer and struck out six in the circle, Alexis Bower was 3 for 3, Madison Wall went 2 for 3, and Taylor Smith had a triple to lead Grace Brethren (10-4-1, 7-1) to a 11-1, five-inning win over St. Bonaventure in a Tri-Valley League game.

BOYS GOLF

  • Calabasas and Thousand Oaks each finished with a team score of 390 to tie for first in the third round of the Marmonte League tournament at Olivas Links Golf Course. Ryan Mattivi fired a 72, Harrison Gahr shot a 73 and Nick Ravo had a 77 to lead the Coyotes, who are first overall after three rounds. Evan Jiang shot a 73, Matt Fisher had a 76 and Gavin McCormick had a 78 for the Lancers, who are second. Nick Waldock shot a 76 and Jared Abercrombie had a 79 for Oaks Christian, which is third. Christian Shackelford shot a 76 and Conner Shackelford had a 78 for fourth-place Newbury Park. Ryan Arnold had a 73 and Dale Capewell shot a 78 for fifth-place Agoura. Jackson Turner shot a 78 and Logan Gonzalez had a 79 for sixth-place Westlake.

  • Ventura defeated Buena 410-434 at Olivas Links Golf Course in the final regular-season match to finish as Pacific View League champions with a 10-0 record. Brady McHenry shot a 74, Adam Anderson had a 77 and Christian McGrath followed with an 85 for the Bulldogs (8-2 in league).

  • Dylan Blacker was the medalist with a 36 and Kevin McDonald shot a 37 as Nordhoff finished with a team score of 198 to win the fourth round of the Citrus Coast League tournament at par-35 Buenaventura Golf Course. The Rangers have won all four rounds, with one round remaining next Thursday. Jacob Marin shot a 37 for second-place Santa Paula (217). Sailor Graham had a 41 for third-place Malibu (228). Jacob Aguilera led fourth-place Fillmore (265) with a 45. Reyli Fabian had a 55 for fifth-place Hueneme (289).

BOYS TENNIS

  • Ben Wang of Foothill Tech defeated Timmy Quest of Villanova Prep 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 in a match that lasted 3 hours and 7 minutes to win the singles championship in the Tri-Valley League.

GIRLS LACROSSE

  • Daniella Guyette made 15 saves, Cassandra Huber had five goals and an assist, Reagan Laubner and Micah Shin each scored two goals, and Penelope Reille and Sophia Laubner had goals to lead Newbury Park to an 11-10 win over Mater Dei.
