Thurston County Sheriff cleared to return to work on limited basis following crash

Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders has been cleared to return to work on a limited basis just over a week after he was hit by a suspected impaired driver.

Sanders was driving his department vehicle in Yelm on the afternoon of April 2 when a pickup truck pulled in front of him, and the two collided.

Sanders was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center due to injuries from the crash, according to Lieutenant Cameron Simper with the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office. He was released from the hospital about eight hours later.

On Monday, the TCSO confirmed that Sanders was cleared to return to administrative work on an “as needed/limited basis.”

“Sheriff Sanders would like to express his gratitude to the members of our community and across the state for the outpouring of support through cards, flowers, and well wishes over this last week,” reads a Facebook post from the TCSO.

He remains under physician care for a head injury sustained in the crash but is expected to make a full recovery.
