The Free Press and the Metropolitian Affairs Coalition will honor three local changemakers who are working to improve the region.

The breakfast will take place 7:30-10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 5 at The Mint at Michigan First Conference Center.

The 2023 Shining Light Award winners from left, Sharnese Marshall , founder and CEO of The Konnection, and is the 2023 winner of the Dave Bing Future Leader Award, former Chief Justice Maura Corrigan, winner of the award in memory of Neal Shine and Anthony White, the artistic director of the Detroit Youth Choir at Marygrove College, the winner of the Eleanor Josaitis Unsung Hero Award.

In its 16th year, the Shining Light Regional Cooperation Awards salute the contributions of lifelong, unsung and young leaders.

The awards are named after the late Free Press Publisher Neal Shine, who worked to build stronger ties among metro Detroit communities during his 45 years at the newspaper; the late Eleanor Josaitis, who, after the unrest of 1967, co-founded Focus: HOPE, leaving a legacy of fighting racism and poverty, and Dave Bing, a former Detroit mayor and Detroit Piston, founder of the Bing Group and the Bing Institute, which empowers youths to reach their full potential.

This year's honorees are:

  • Dave Bing Young Leader Award: Sharnese Marshall, founder and CEO of The Konnection, which works to improve chronic absenteeism.

  • Eleanor Josaitis Unsung Hero Award: Anthony White, artistic director of Detroit Youth Choir, which teaches students from ages 8 to 18 and across the region through music education, dance and theatrical arts.

  • Neal Shine Award for Exemplary Regional Leadership: Maura Corrigan, retired Michigan Supreme Court justice who led the state's department of health and spent her career working to improve the lives of children.

Tickets to the breakfast are $65 or $650 for a table of 10, and are available at shininglightawards.com.
