WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Outgoing Purdue University President Mitch Daniels will welcome a former boss to the West Lafayette campus — former President George W. Bush — for Daniels' final Presidential Lecture Series event.

Daniels served in the White House as Bush’s first budget director.

“A Conversation with George W. Bush,” scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, in Elliott Hall of Music, "will feature a discussion of leadership in challenging times and the responsibilities of an informed citizenship," according to a Purdue announcement.

Bush will be the third in his immediate family to speak at Purdue during Daniels' time as president, after former First Lady Laura Bush and daughters Barbara and Jenna appeared during the university's sesquincentennial celebrations.

“We’ve made efforts during these past 10 years to continually enrich the level and quality of intellectual conversations here at Purdue, and we are grateful to the nearly 40 Presidential Lecture Series guests of many viewpoints and perspectives who have joined us,” Daniels said in the announcement. “It would be hard to top the honor of ending this series with the former president of the United States.”

Daniels earned the name, "The Blade," as Bush's first director of the Office of Management and Budget, for his spending restraint. He won the same praise as Indiana governor, assuming that role in 2005 as the state was in a budget deficit, transformed to a surplus under his watch. Purdue students have also enjoyed an in-state tuition freeze for more than a decade, locked in at under $10,000 a year.

Bush, who served as president from 2001-2009, faced early on the worst act of domestic terrorism, when the United States was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001. Son of former President George H.W. Bush, he's credited with No Child Left Behind Act to raise education, navigating through the 2001 recession and cutting taxes.
