A Broadway musical that promises to take you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back is headed to the Kentucky Center.

"Hadestown," the Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical, is in Louisville for a six-day run. The show is part of the PNC Broadway in Louisville series, and individual tickets are available.

From celebrated singer-songwriter, Anaïs Mitchell and director Rachel Chavkin, the musical at its core is a love story. A haunting and hopeful theatrical experience, "Hadestown" intertwines two mythic tales between young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice and King Hades and his wife Persephone.

"It's a magical show. The sets and the music are incredible, but it's really hard to describe this show. You really just have to see it," said Leslie Broecker, president of Broadway Across America Midwest. "It's a super current and dark love story and really the one (ticket) to get."

The brainchild of indie-folk singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, "Hadestown" began as a community theater project that toured in a silver-painted school bus around Mitchell's home state of Vermont more than 15 years ago.

The folk opera, influenced by everything from the "Threepenny Opera" and English and Scottish folk ballads to Peter Gabriel and jazz, blues and gospel music, was eventually recorded as a concept album featuring Ani DiFranco and Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon.

"Hadestown" transformed again when Mitchell began working with theatrical mastermind Rachel Chavkin ("Natasha," "Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812"). In 2019 the revamped musical found its way to Broadway, winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

"People have been incredibly supportive of the time it took to bring this show to Broadway," Mitchell told the Recording Academy after winning at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. "In a way, people are invested in and have really been part of the journey itself, not just the destination. They’ve literally been part of the process."
