Tidal floods hit Indonesia's central Java

STORY: High waves breached the seawall of the city in Central Java on Monday (May 23), causing floodwaters to reach 2.1 meters by Tuesday, among the highest levels seen in the area in decades.

“This the most severe and the highest flood that has ever happened. Also, because of a blackout that occurred, the water pumping machine didn’t work well. The destroyed seawall created a strong tidal wave too,” said port worker Sandi Sampurna.

More than 2,000 people had been evacuated as of Tuesday, but no casualties have been reported, according to data from the Regional Disaster Management Agency, which added the extent of the damage was still being assessed as it worked with relevant agencies to coordinate logistics for impacted residents.

Indonesia, one of the most disaster-prone nations on earth, frequently suffers from floods and landslides, particularly during the rainy season from November to March.
