Tidelands Health to open acute care hospital in Horry County

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) – A new Tidelands Health hospital will soon be coming to Horry County.

The Tidelands Health Carolina Bays Hospital will be located at the Interchange of Highways 31 and 707.

The hospital will offer many advanced medical and surgical services, with the newest addition of an open-heart surgery program operated in partnership with MUSC Health.

“We know our patients will take comfort in knowing they have experts at Tidelands Health and MUSC Health working together to take care of their hearts,” said vice president Amy Stevens.

The new hospital is the first Tidelands Health acute care hospital to be located in Horry County. Stevens said there is a need for hospital beds in Horry County, and that the facility is meeting that need.

The hospital will also be home to Tidelands Health Extended Care Hospital, a 24-bed long-term acute care hospital, 36 medical-surgical beds, and inpatient rehabilitation services.

In addition to the opne-heart surgery program, the hospital will have a cardiac catheterization lab and will be fully staffed with cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons.

“There are hundreds of thousands of people a year who need open heart surgery across the country,” Stevens said. “We are very happy to bring that service to Tidelands Health and with our partners at MUSC Health.”

Officials said they recognize that Horry County is growing rapidly and they wanted to expand their services.

Stevens emphasized they want people to have the care they need “nearby.” Both Tidelands and MUSC Health are working to recruit new heart specialists to the area.

“We have great cardiac specialist here serving our community, but because of the growth, we need to continue growing our medical staff,” Stevens said. “There are aggressive recruitment efforts underway and so we expect to see, not just in cardiac care, but across the board, just the continued addition of new physicians and specialists to serve our community.”

The hospital has already received state approval and is currently working through permitting and design work. They hope to have a groundbreaking in the coming months, with a projected opening date in 2028.
