His vehicle was traveling between 84 and 87 mph in an area outside Los Angeles with a 45 mph speed limit, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said in a news conference.

ELIOTT RODRIGUEZ: We now know the cause of the crash that severely injured golf legend Tiger Woods. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Woods was driving 87 miles an hour in a 45 mile an hour zone. Investigators say Woods likely mistook the gas pedal for the brake, since no braking was detected when he slammed his SUV into a tree.

SHERIFF ALEX VILLANUEVA: Estimated speeds at the first area of impact were 84 to 87 miles per hour, and the final estimated speed when the vehicle struck the tree was 75 miles per hour. There were no citations issued, and there were no signs of impairment.

ELIOTT RODRIGUEZ: Officials did not issue a warrant for a blood test. Woods suffered serious leg injuries from the crash on February 23. No charges are expected.
