A key factor in Tiger Woods’ rehabilitation after a gruesome car crash left his right leg badly injured has been his devotion to his family, according to a new report.

“Being a dad has helped him stay focused on his recovery,” a source told People.

“At times, it’s been very difficult for him both physically and mentally. His leg injuries caused him extreme pain. He is a fighter and has been determined to get better though.”

The golf great needed emergency surgery in February after the single-car rollover incident in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., left him with significant injuries to his lower right leg.

Woods, 45, has a 12-year-old son, Charlie, and 14-year-old daughter, Sam.

Speaking with Golf Digest in May about his rehab, Woods described the situation as “more painful than anything I have ever experienced.”

“My physical therapy has been keeping me busy,” Woods said at the time. “I do my routines every day and am focused on my No. 1 goal right now: walking on my own. Taking it one step at a time.”

Woods was not charged in the crash, which involved his SUV hitting a raised median at between 84 and 87 miles per hour before striking a tree.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said in April that an investigation determined the cause of the crash was “driving at a speed unsafe for the road conditions and the inability to negotiate the curve of the roadway.”

Woods has won 15 major PGA championships in his career, which is the second most all time.

A source told People in a report earlier this month that Woods is “optimistic that he’ll be able to return to tour.”
