A TikTok creator who sleeps with her hair in a bun is explaining why she does so, after coming across a celebrity hairstylist who also recommends it.

On Sept. 21, Maddi Good (@maddigood) revealed that she routinely puts her hair in a “heatless” bun before going to bed each night. She felt compelled to share this after seeing a TikTok posted by Jonathan Van Ness (@jvn_official), hairstylist and founder of JVN Hair, urging others to refrain from sleeping with their hair down.

“I’ve been saying this for about a year now when I shared my viral heatless bun that I do every single night. I’m so glad that I found that video because it just validated that I know that this is the best hairstyle to sleep with,” Good said. “Even when your hair is down, that friction alone when you’re lying on it or you’re rolling around … is so damaging. It’s what we call mechanical damage.”

With more than 8.6 million views, 549,000 likes, 105,300 saves and 704 comments, it seems Good’s video has once again gone viral. Creators in the comments are voicing both appreciation and concern about her heatless bun hack.

“But what can I do if I can’t put it up because any tension on it causes me migraines,” @alenieri asked.

“I simply cannot sleep with my hair down, I will have a panic attack with my hair getting in my face/s getting stuck under my shoulder,” @goatmilkyumyum revealed.

“Your hair looks like it’s made from liquid silk so I absolutely trust you on this,” @kiwispice wrote.

Van Ness suggested that people sleep with their hair “loosely tied up with a silk scrunchy, as sleeping with your hair down can lead to the disintegration of your ends.” This, according to the Queer Eye star, is because of the rubbing, friction and tension of rubbing against your body and sheets.

Fallon Toni Chavez and Ashley Wahler, two celebrity hairstylists, shared information that further supports Van Ness’s suggestion.

“Never go to bed without tying your hair up [for long hair], as loose hair can tangle. Removing tangles later can cause breakage,” Chavez told Byrdie.

Wahler advocated for the use of specific hair ties overnight, telling Byrdie: “Stay away from metal and rubber hair ties.”

“When heat is applied, the natural oils are stripped from your hair, and the water molecules evaporate, changing the hair’s protein structure,” Dyson, a company that makes products including hair care tools, explained. “The high temperatures cause the water to dry up quickly, which affects the structure of each strand and can crack the cuticles, the outer layer of hair, making hair more vulnerable to further damage.”

Good took to TikTok to share a step-by-step guide on how she achieves her overnight bun.

She starts by flipping her head over and gathering all her hair at the top of her head. Afterward, she ”shakes out” her curtain bangs and front pieces. She emphasizes that the messier the bun, the better it is. For the bun itself, which Good says she does ”in a very specific way,” she flips her hair over her hand and then twists her hair until she reaches the ends.

”I grab this and I twist, and that way the twist holds, but I can loosen the base of it so there’s not any tension on my scalp,” she said on Oct. 13. “And it literally feels like there’s nothing up there.”

She then secures her bun with a large scrunchy. She sticks her front pieces of hair behind her ears, which she says is ”the most important part,” because it’ll ”give you that nice face frame.”

”And then just loosen it,” she adds. ”And that’s the bun.”
