Tim Hill, 61, candidate for City Council at-large seat C, is chair of Knoxville-Knox County Planning and a member of the Sports Authority, which is building the new stadium downtown.

The question has arisen whether Hill would continue serving on both these boards should he be elected to City Council in November. The short answer is no. He must vacate those seats if he takes office the third Saturday of December.

Since he is a city appointee to the Planning Commission, Mayor Indya Kincannon (if she is reelected) will pick his successor.

As for the Sports Authority, Kincannon and County Mayor Glenn Jacobs must pick a successor, and that person must be approved by both the County Commission and the City Council.

Hill is opposing council incumbent Amelia Parker, 44, and Change Center director Matthew Best, 33.

Early voting is underway and ends Aug. 24. Primary election day is Aug. 29. Please vote!

The city mayor’s race, in my view, is very likely to be decided on Aug. 29. The four City Council contests will go to a runoff.

The municipal judge contest is very competitive. A runoff is certainly a possibility in the general election on Nov. 7. The likeliest top two vote getters are Tyler Caviness, 31, and incumbent John Rosson, 75. The other two candidates are Andrew Beamer, 38, and Mary Ward, 57.

Rosson, who is seeking his 10th four-year term as city judge, declined to say if he would seek an 11th term in 2027 if elected this year. Many have said Rosson wants to serve only one more term, but when I asked him point-blank, Rosson declined to say what his plans in 2027 might be.

Several City Council members are considering submitting a charter amendment to city voters next year to have term limits apply to municipal judge. Voters would have to adopt a charter amendment by referendum for it to become mandatory.

Lois Claire Kincannon, 83, mother of Mayor Indya Kincannon, passed away in Knoxville on Aug. 10. Deepest sympathy and condolences to the Kincannon family.

The arraignment of former president Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 3 was unusual from countless perspectives, starting with who he is. One had to notice that no family member accompanied him, including his wife, Melania, or any of his children, even his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who worked at the White House. Second, the magistrate point-blank told him not to tamper with any juror.

U.S. Sen. Bill Hagerty is holding a fundraiser Aug. 21 at the home of Scott and Hope Davis. It is co-hosted by U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett – who has not yet endorsed Trump for president – and Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs, who is considering a race for governor in 2026.

Meanwhile, Trump challenger Sen. Tim Scott, a Republican from South Carolina, is in Knoxville on Aug. 17 for a fundraiser hosted by former Gov. Bill Haslam.

The Southern Environmental Law Center is challenging TVA’s two large projects that would replace coal-fired plants at the Cumberland and Kingston facilities with gas. The environmental group says that as the biggest public utility in the U.S., TVA can derail the Biden administration’s effort to decarbonize the power sector by 2035.
