Tim Scott cuts short presidential campaign trip in Iowa after catching the flu

Republican presidential contender Tim Scott is cancelling several Iowa campaign events because of illness.

The South Carolina senator had announced a four-day trip to Iowa following Wednesday's presidential debate in Miami and appeared as scheduled at an event Thursday evening hosted by the Iowa Real Estate Developers Association in Des Moines.

On Friday, he was to hold additional events in Carroll, Jefferson and Boone, but all three were cancelled after Scott came down with the flu. Campaign spokesman Nathan Brand said Scott will be returning to Charleston, South Carolina, to rest, and "looks forward to being back in the Hawkeye State next week."

In addition to Friday's events, Scott also planned to campaign in Stanhope and Storm Lake on Saturday, and to attend church in Iowa Sunday. Those events also are cancelled, although the campaign hopes to reschedule them.

Scott has recently reshuffled his campaign to focus more resources on Iowa, with a promise to campaign here every week through the caucuses in January. His campaign has not yet announced plans for his next Iowa visit.
