Humans and their furry companions had a tail-wagging good time at the ribbon cutting of the Timberlane Dog Park in Hesperia.

Friday's celebration was held at the park, located at 9480 Timberlane Avenue. Several dog owners at the event told the Daily Press they were excited about the opening of the dog park, which is divided for small and large breeds.

“Having a safe place for my dog to interact with other dogs is ideal,” said Brandy Cooper, who lives nearby the park, which also features a baseball field, a playground, picnic areas and a community center.

Park district employees were on hand to offer cookies to humans, and dog bones and whipped cream “pup cups” for canines.

District General Manager Kyle Wooley said the park district has been working to bring much-needed amenities to the community.

He added that the addition of the new dog park marks another milestone in the district’s efforts. An additional dog park is also located at Lime Street Park, with another planned for Palm Street Park.

‘Nose-to-butt’ greetings

Dog trainer Sean Lunnon, owner of A Breed Apart Dog Training in Phelan, was on hand to demonstrate to visitors proper dog park etiquette.

With Lunnon guiding two large dogs on leashes, and an assistant with another dog, the trainer told the audience how dogs that are strangers should meet.

“Ideally what you want is for dogs to meet nose-to-butt,” Lunnon told the audience. “Nose-to-nose greetings can sometimes go very poorly for dogs.”

He said bringing an overexcited dog to a dog park to drain their energy is not the best idea.

Lunnon explained that a park is like “Chuck E. Cheese” for some dogs, where they may become too overstimulated, which may cause problems.

Employees from Kahoots Feed and Pet were also at the event giving out dog freebies, and the Cheese on 3 Photo Booth offered to take free photos.
