BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The election for Kern County’s fifth supervisorial seat is just around the corner.

Candidate Kimberly Salas has served a wide-ranging career in the county, including working for former Kern Supervisor Michael Rubio and current Assemblywoman Dr. Jasmeet Bains.

Salas joined Kern County In Depth to talk more about the upcoming election.

Salas was born and raised in the fifth district, and has lived there for 43 years. Salas and her husband raised her kids in the district, and bought their first house there.

“My three issues are public safety, infrastructure, and health,” said Salas.

Salas told 17’s Alex Fisher that she has been endorsed by several public safety organizations, including the Kern County Firefighters Association and Kern County prosecutors.

“Public safety is one of my top priorities, and making sure the residents of the fifth district get the needed resources in that area,” said Salas.

Salas also brought up the fact that the district has dilapidated roads.

“I dodge potholes on a daily basis,” said Salas.

As for health disparities, Salas said she would work with public health to ensure people in the fifth district are healthy.

“I have the experience, I’ve lived in the district,” said Salas. “Down where we live… there’s so much need — the graffiti, the trash cleanup — I want to thank the Open Door Network because I see their cars out… if they didn’t have that service or that resource, that would look a whole lot worse.”

Salas said she is running now because she thinks “it’s time for a change.”

“People that have endorsed me have spoken about the time for a change,” said Salas. “The incumbent has been in there for 12 years… after 12 years, I would think that the district would need improvement.”
