Poll results: Penns Valley swimmer selected as athlete of the week for Jan. 29-Feb. 5

A Penns Valley swimmer was the Centre County athlete of the week for Jan. 29-Feb. 5, according to readers of CentreDaily.com.

Penns Valley swimming’s Liam Quigley set a record and walked away with two gold medals at the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference Swimming Championships in Hollidaysburg. Quigley won gold in the 100 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke — setting the Hollidaysburg High School pool record in the 100 breaststroke.

He had 24,654 votes, or 40% of the poll, and was followed by a member of the Penns Valley girls swimming team, Mila Klena, who had 22,405 votes.

Klena took home two gold medals from the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference Swimming Championships in Hollidaysburg. She won the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke at the event.

Naomi Crispin, Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy girls basketball: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy girls basketball stayed undefeated during the week and was led by Naomi Crispin, who had big games in all three matchups during the week. She put up 23 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals against West Branch, 30 points, five rebounds, eight assists and six steals against Newport, and 30 points, four rebounds, three assists and seven steals against Upper Dauphin. Crispin is first in the league in scoring and assists so far this season.

Jayden Stamm, Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy boys basketball: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy boys basketball’s Jayden Stamm led the team in scoring in all three of its games during the week, helping the team go 2-1. He had 27 points in a senior night win over Newport, 15 points in a win over Susquenita and 13 points in a narrow loss to Williamsburg. He finished as the leading scorer in the Tri-Valley league this season.

Wyatt Long, Bellefonte boys wrestling: Bellefonte boys wrestling’s Wyatt Long went 5-0 during the Sharon Duals during the week. Long helped the team to a second place finish by earning pins in all five of his victories without giving up a single point. He came in third in the poll, with 8,329 votes.

Kiaha McCool and Katelyn Packer, Bellefonte girls swimming: Bellefonte girls swimming’s Kiaha McCool and Katelyn Packer had big performances at the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference Championship meet. They each won five events, overlapping in the 200 medley relay, the 400 free relay and the 4 x 100 IM relay. McCool also won the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle, while Packer won the 100 fly and 500 free.

McCool finishes her high school dual meet career undefeated in individual meets in her four seasons.
