Timelapse Shows Massive Dust Storm in Phoenix Metro Area

A large dust storm, known locally as a haboob, rolled through the Phoenix Metropolitan Area in Arizona on Friday, September 2, enveloping towns and cities and leading to near-zero visibility in some areas.

This footage from Pete Miramontes shows a wall of dust covering the downtown Chandler. The 14-second timelapse video took about two minutes to record in real time, Miramontes said.

The National Weather Service warned that wind speeds of up to 70 mph were possible as the dust storm passed through. Credit: Pete Miramontes via Storyful
