Timelapse Video Shows La Palma Volcano Spewing Thick Clouds of Ash

Timelapse footage posted by Spanish Transport Ministry affiliate IGN-CNIG on September 29 shows dense, thick ash being pumped out of an erupting volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma, where a night earlier a river of lava had reached the ocean.

The Guardia Civil, one of Spain’s two national police forces, warned people within 2.2 miles (3.5 km) of the eruption to stay in their homes, “given the possibility of harmful gas” as the molten lava meets the water.

The IGN-CNIG said this video was recorded over a 50 minute period from around 8 am local time on the morning of September 29. Credit: IGN-CNIG via Storyful
