Timeline: How bank robbery, shooting that injured Columbus officer happened

Around 4:07 p.m. on July 6, Columbus police officers and three people inside a stolen Porsche Cayenne SUV were in a shootout on Interstate 70 east near Downtown Columbus.

Fazsal Darod, 23, and Aden A. Jama, 20, have been arrested and charged in U.S. District Court with allegedly robbing a bank and using a firearm during a violent crime. A third suspect, 19-year-old Abdisamad Ismail, died at the scene of the shooting.

A Columbus police officer, who has not yet been named, was injured in the shooting and is recovering at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center.

Based on court records and accounts from various police agencies, here's what we know about how events unfolded:

July 3

A black Chevy Corvette is reported stolen in Minerva Park.

July 4

8:25 p.m. Darod posts a photograph on Facebook appearing to show himself behind the wheel of a vehicle that resembles a Chevy Corvette. Darod is wearing a red and white striped shirt, according to court records.

July 5

2:32 p.m. An armed robbery is reported at the Fifth Third Bank located at 1669 Fishinger Road in Upper Arlington. A black Chevy Corvette was seen fleeing the bank at a high rate of speed. A police report indicates more than $75,000 was stolen in the robbery.

3:00 p.m. Surveillance camera footage from a hotel on the city's Northeast Side shows Darod and Jama together in the lobby area. Darod is wearing a red and white striped shirt, according to court records.

July 6

1:33 p.m. Darod texts Jama's cell phone with the address of the Byers Imports Car Lot, 409 N. Hamilton Road, in Whitehall, according to court records.

2:13 p.m. An armed robbery is reported at the car lot. The suspect is reported to have pointed a firearm at an employee in the dealership's showroom and demanded the keys to a Porsche Cayenne SUV, according to 911 calls from the incident.

4:00 p.m. An armed robbery is reported at the Fifth Third Bank located at 2455 Hilliard Rome Road. A suspect, described as wearing a green baseball hat, COVID-type face mask, black hoodie and light colored pants is reported to have displayed a gun.

Whitehall police officers, in unmarked vehicles, have followed the Porsche to the bank and attempt to box it in to prevent it from leaving. The Porsche rams one of those vehicles, forces its way out and speeds off, according to body camera footage from Whitehall police.

4:07 p.m. Columbus police locate the Porsche on Interstate 70 east near West Mound Street. Gunfire is exchanged between officers and at least one person inside the vehicle.

Two suspects, one wearing a red and white striped shirt, flee the scene on foot.

4:09 p.m. A Columbus police officer is reported to have been hit by gunfire and is taken by his partner to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center where he undergoes emergency surgery.

4:20 p.m. The third suspect, wearing a green baseball cap, black hoodie, light colored pants and a COVID mask, is pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect is later identified as 19-year-old Abdisamad Ismail by the Franklin County Coroner's office. Police find a Glock handgun with an extended magazine near Ismail, according to court records. Another handgun is located on the highway in the direction the two other suspects ran.

At some point during the afternoon, the two suspects are seen on video entering a women's shelter but are turned away. One suspect is wearing a red and white striped shirt.

4:53 P.M. Surveillance footage from the hotel shows a Toyota Camry pulling into a parking space and the two suspects getting out of the vehicle wearing the same clothing as they were at the scene.

The investigation into the shooting involves looking at data from cell phone towers in the area of the shooting, the bank robbery and the car dealership for numbers that were at all three scenes at the time of the incidents. One phone number is seen at all three, according to court records.

Columbus police use the phone number to look up a CashApp account that is linked to Darod. That phone number is also listed on police reports as belonging to Darod dating back to 2017.

11:00 p.m. Columbus police gang enforcement unit detectives ask for a cellular phone ping to locate Darod's phone, to confirm his phone's presence at the car dealership, bank and highway at the time the incidents were reported.

11:50 p.m. A Toyota Camry is seen arriving at a house on the 1200 block of John G. McCoy Circle, where Darod is believed to live. A man matching Darod's description goes inside the home.

July 7

12:05 a.m. Darod leaves the home with multiple other people, getting back into the Camry, which is then stopped. Darod is detained for questioning.

During an interview, Darod tells investigators, according to court records, that Ismail forced him to drive the Porsche to the bank at gunpoint and forced him to commit the robbery. Darod is released pending further investigation.

After Darod is released, the cell phone ping confirms his phone's location at all three locations. Darod's phone is also located at the Fishinger Road bank branch on July 5 at the time of the reported robbery, as well as an undisclosed location where the Corvette was found.

1:30 a.m. Darod is reported to have been taken back into custody.

11:15 a.m. Columbus police announce the arrest of one suspect and say they are still looking for a second suspect.

July 8

12:35 p.m. Jama is scheduled to be on a flight from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport to Turkey with a departure time of 12:35 P.M.

12:46 p.m. Jama is taken into custody at the airport by U.S. Marshals.

5:00 p.m. U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio Kenneth Parker announces Jama's arrest and the filing of federal charges against Darod and Jama.

July 10

Jama is expected to have a hearing in Illinois to begin extradition proceedings to be brought back to Ohio. Darod is expected to appear in U.S. District Court for the first time.
