The San Luis Obispo County sheriff admits that there were some missteps early on in the investigation, which made it tough to get to this point. Here is a timeline in the case of Kristin Smart
KURTIS MING: Now in this case, the sheriff admits some missteps early on in the investigation made it tough to get to this point. Here's a timeline.
Smart disappeared on May 25, 1996. In July of that year, Paul Flores was named a key witness, then a person of interest. His family's home searched. Smart was legally declared dead in 2002, exactly six years after she was last seen. Investigators excavated a Cal Poly hillside for remains in 2016.
And then last year, a number of search warrants were served at the homes of Paul Flores and his parents. Flores was arrested in February of this year on unrelated gun charges stemming from those searches. Investigators searched his parents' home last month and named Flores the prime suspect for the first time.
