Timeline of Eastland Mall: 1966-2022
Eastland Mall is closing its doors after a 54-year run at 2740 S. Hamilton Road in Columbus.
The mall, which was the area's first fully enclosed mall, has gone through several changes since opening in 1968. Here's a look at some of the highlights through the years:
July 12, 1966: Ground broken on Eastland Mall construction.
1966: Lazarus (later Macy's) opens at Eastland Mall.
Feb. 14, 1968: Developer Richard Jacobs opens the 940,000-square-foot Eastland Mall with 56 stores, preceded by Northland Mall and followed by Westland Mall the following year.
1998: A new mall entrance, a dozen more stores and a food court open.
2001: Cigna Investments takes over ownership after Jacobs defaults.
2003: Glimcher Realty Trust acquires the mall for $29.7 million.
July 2007: Glimcher announces Macy's store would be razed to make way for a new JCPenney prototype.
June 2014: Glimcher puts Eastland Mall up for auction with a bid minimum of $9 million.
Aug. 2014: Glimcher walks away from the property, relinquishing ownership to LNR Property.
May 1, 2015: Eastland Mall property sold for $9.7 million.
May 2015: JCPenney closes Eastland Mall store.
Spring 2017: Macy's closes at Eastland Mall.
Sept. 2017: Sears closes store at Eastland.
Feb. 14, 2018: Eastland Mall marks its 50th anniversary with 25 stores and kiosks still open.

2021: Columbus city attorney files first of health and safety violations.
June 2022: Eastland Mall declared a public nuisance, owners ordered to make repairs.
September 2022: Eastland mall owners found in contempt of court order.
Dec. 31, 2022: The last of the original three "directional" malls, Eastland Mall closes after 54 years in Columbus.
