This week we present the nine winter Olympians with Erie connections. At the top of the list are Erie natives Caryn Kadavy, a figure skater in the 1988 Calgary Games, and Ryan Zapolski, a hockey goaltender in the 2018 Pyeongchang Games.
The other American was Jim Craig, the starting goaltender on the Miracle on Ice hockey team in 1980 at Lake Placid, New York. After the Olympics, he played briefly for the minor league Erie Blades.
Mercyhurst University has produced five Olympians, all in hockey: Zapolski, Meghan Agosta-Marciano, who won three gold medals and a silver in four Olympics, and her fellow Canadian Bailey Bram. Vilma Tanskanen and Emma Nuutinen played for Finland in the 2014 and 2018 Olympics, respectively.
Two Erie Otters players also are winter Olympians. Arvid Rekis, who played for the Otters from 1996-2000, represented Latvia at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics. Sondre Olden, a member of the Otters in 2011-12, played for Norway in 2014.
