Times' Top Performances from last week: Sept. 5-11

Every Monday, the Beaver County Times will recognize both individual athletes and teams for their impressive performances that took place in the last week of high school sports action. Here are the standout efforts from the week of Sept. 5.

Cross Country

Dominic Filtcraft, Hopewell

Hopewell hosted South Side, Riverside, and Rochester in a quad meet on Tuesday and the Hopewell captured the win at home as Filtcraft came in first place on the boys' side, finishing in 16:45. Filtcraft also finished with a time of 15:57 good for fourth place in the Red White & Blue Classic in White Oak.

Ethan Papa, Riverside

In the Red, White & Blue Classic in White Oak, Riverside's Ethan Papa finished in second place with a time of 15:57, finishing behind just defending WPIAL Class 2A champion Ryan Pajak of Ringgold, who set a course record at the invitational. Papa's performance helped lead the Panthers to a second-place finish behind defending WPIAL Class 2A champion Hampton.

Maxwell Hamilton, Our Lady of Sacred Heart

Hamilton almost finished in first place in Saturday’s Red White & Blue Classic and just came up four seconds short of Eden Christian’s Nathan Garret who finished with a time of 16:30. Hamilton clocked a time of 16:34.

Beaver Area girls

Competing in the Red, White & Blue Classic in White Oak, the Beaver Area girls' cross country team edged out Central Cambria Saturday with 65 team points, picking up the win in 2A by two points. Led by senior Ella Andrew (fourth, 19:33), the Bobcats saw four runners finish in the top 15. Behind Andrew, sophomore Rylie Teapole placed 10th with a time of 20:09, while junior Allison Tate finished 11th with a time of 20:16. Sophomore Danica Purtell placed 15th with a time of 20:32.

Football

Brody Almashy, South Side

Almashy got the job done both in the air and on the ground in the Rams' 38-14 win over Burgettstown on the road Friday night. Almashy went 8-for-9 passing for 120 yards and three touchdowns. He was just as effective on the ground as he rushed nine times for 44 yards and two touchdowns. South Side Improved to 3-0 on the season.

Isaac Pupi, Beaver

Pupi was almost perfect in the Bobcats' 28-18 win over Freedom Friday night as he went 12-for-14 passing for 171 yards and three touchdowns. Pupi also found the end zone via the ground, rushing for a five-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Bret Fitzsimmons, Central Valley

After Fitzsimmons rushed for over 200 yards last week it was going to be interesting to see what he would do to follow up that performance in their first 4A test of the season. He was once again a dominant force on the ground rushing eight times for 122 yards and three touchdowns in the Warriors' 48-9 win over Hampton.

Elijah Palmer-McCaine, Ellwood City

For the first time since 2018, the Wolverines were victorious, defeating Carlynton 46-6 and a big part of the winning effort was thanks to Elijah Palmer-McCaine. Palmer-McCaine rushed seven times for 102 yards and three touchdowns. He got the scoring started for the Wolverines early in the game and it was pedal to the metal for Ellwood from there. This was a huge statement win for new head coach Dan Bradley and will look to continue to build on this win next week against Freedom.

Ty Schultheis, Freedom

Even though the Bulldogs fell to Beaver on Friday, Schultheis still had a pretty impressive game, going 8-for-13 passing for 231 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Jaren Brickner, Beaver Falls

Brickner was a two-way threat for Beaver Falls on Friday evening as the Tigers defeated Knoch 44-6. Brickner was 2-for-12 passing for 111 yards, while rushing 14 times for 131 yards and finding the end zone one time.

Gage Upton, West Allegheny

Upton was dominant in West Allegheny's 49-7 shellacking win over Ringgold on Friday as he was a perfect 4-for-4 passing and threw for 84 yards and two touchdowns. West Allegheny has been a force to be reckoned with as they improve to 3-0 on the season.

Nehemiah Azeem, OLSH

Azeem overcame some adversity in Our Lady of Sacred Heart’s 28-13 win over Clairton on Saturday evening. After throwing two interceptions early in the game, it all seemed to click for the senior gunslinger as he threw three passing touchdowns and used his legs for one rushing touchdown as the Chargers rolled past the Bears on Saturday.

Deaven Ivory, Ambridge

Ivory had a night to remember in the thrilling back-and-forth battle between Ambridge and Neshannock. Though the Bridgers lost, Ivory had a career night, completing 12-of-24 passes for 158 yards and three touchdowns, and added a rushing touchdown in the 40-34 loss.

Trent McKnight, Ambridge

McKnight was often on the receiving end of Ivory's big night for the Bridgers, hauling in six passes for 96 yards and three touchdowns.

Antonio Laure, Rochester

Laure had a monster night in Rochester's bounce back win over New Brighton, 60-13, rushing 17 times for 143 yards and three scores, coming through with a pivotal offensive performance on the ground to lead the Rams.

Boys Soccer

Cameron Diggins, Quaker Valley

The state champs are on a roll once again and continued to dominate this week as they defeated Riverside by a final score of 11-0 on Tuesday. Diggins found the score sheet four different times in the onslaught against the Panthers which marked his first goals of the season. After the Quakers defeated Riverside they fell to Mars on Thursday by a final score of 1-0.

Davi Jansson, Moon

Jansson was a force to be reckoned with on the pitch for the Tigers this week and helped the Tigers steamroll past their opposition. In the team’s 7-0 win over Central Valley, Jansson tallied two goals and one assist. He followed up that performance by scoring the lone goal for Moon against South Fayette to push the Tigers past the Lions on Thursday.

Girls Soccer

Hailey Longwell, Moon

The Tigers also had a successful week out on the pitch as they dominated West Allegheny by a final score of 5-0. Longwell was an integral part in the winning effort after she picked up a hat trick on Wednesday. She then continued her dominance against Butler on Saturday where she scored two goals in the team’s 3-1 victory.

Boys Golf

Jake Sheeshly, Blackhawk

Sheeshly played an important role in the Cougars' three wins this past week. In Blackhawk's win over Central Valley, Sheeshly finished with a round of 45. He improved on his Tuesday score and finished with a round of 41 against Beaver Falls in the Blackhawk win. He finished off the week by posting another round of 45 in a section match against Ambridge on Friday en route to the team’s win over the Bridgers.

Josh Lytle, South Side

Lytle was at it once again on the links as he shot a round of 39 in South Side's win over New Brighton. South Side continues to impress rolling through everyone in their path as they remain unbeaten and improve to 8-0 on the year.

Anthony Treozone, Moon

Treozone had another great week out on the course as Moon continues to impress, improving to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in section play. As for Treozone, he shot a round of 37 in the Tigers' win over Chartiers Valley.

Girls Golf

Angelina Schlid, Moon

The Tigers had a date with Seneca Valley on Tuesday afternoon and Schlid impressed in the match against the Raiders, finishing with a round of 40.

Eva Bulger, Quaker Valley

Bulger put on a show at the MAC championships on Thursday as she finished first overall individually, posting a final score of 69 on a full 18-hole course. She shot -2 on the front, recording three birdies. She then shot a 35 (-1) on the back as the team finished third overall with a 260.

Kennedy Norton, Central Valley

The Warriors finished in second place in the MAC championships on Thursday and Norton played a big factor in that as she finished with 41 on the front nine and a 37 on the back, recording a round of 78 on the day, helping Central Valley finish with a final score of 249 which was only four strokes back of Moon.

GIRLS TENNIS

Lyric Knepshield, Blackhawk

Knepshield returns to the top performer’s list for the second consecutive week as she defeated Lindsey Urban in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) in the team’s 3-2 win over Neshannock on Tuesday.

Sara Miloszewski, Central Valley

The Warriors continue to roll through their schedule this season as on Wednesday Miloszewski shut out Jessica King of Beaver Falls in straight sets (6-0, 6-0). She followed that up against Ellwood City on Thursday by defeating Tessa Folino in straight sets (6-1, 6-0).

Lana Gagne, Central Valley

Just like Miloszewski, Gagne had a stellar week out on the courts, defeating Bria Harris of Beaver Falls in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) on Wednesday. Gagne was not done, as against Ellwood City she defeated Kailyn Hamilton in straight sets (6-1, 6-2).

VOLLEYBALL

Taylor Godshall, Central Valley

Godshall was active in the team’s five-set victory over OLSH on Tuesday as she had 13 Kills and 12 Digs in the Warriors' tense matchup against the Chargers.

Lilly Peterson, Moon

The Tigers got off on the right foot this year thanks to Peterson as she put together an impressive stat line this week for Moon. In the team’s four-set win against South Fayette, Peterson tallied 13 kills and three aces against the Lions. She then added to both of those totals on Thursday as she had seven kills and five aces in a straight-set win against Oakland on Thursday. The Tigers improve to 2-0 in the young season.
