Times wins 12 awards in newspaper competition

Cape Cod Times reporters and photographers won 12 awards in the 2022 New England Newspaper & Press Association Better Newspaper Competition.

The awards were presented May 6 in Waltham. The Times submitted 32 entries, and judges reviewed hundreds of entries from across New England news publications.

Awards touched on photojournalism, investigative pieces, spot news, obituaries, sports coverage and more.

"Times reporters, editors and photographers work hard to bring quality news and information to our readers, who are at the forefront of everything we do," said Anne Brennan, Times executive editor. "It is nice to receive this recognition from our New England peers with these awards."

Here are the winners:

Steve Heaslip: First Place, Personality Photo; First Place Sports Feature Photo; Second and Third Place Pictorial Photo.

Denise Coffey: First Place, Business and Economic Reporting for her stories on the Levee Breaks bankruptcy coverage.

Eric Williams: First Place, Humor Column, for Curious Cape Cod.

Rachael Devaney: Second Place, Racial, Ethnic or Gender Issue Coverage, for her story on protecting indigenous burial ground tells a larger story; Third Place, Obituaries, for her remembrance of Susan Quinones.

Ron Schloerb: Second Place, Sports Feature Photo.

Cape Cod Times Staff: Second Place, Spot News, for coverage of the bomb cyclone that struck the Cape in October 2021.

Doug Fraser: First Place, Energy Reporting, for his Solutions Journalism series on the burgeoning wind industry in Massachusetts.

Saralee Perel (freelance columnist): Third Place, Humor Column.
