Timothy L. Howey, 62, remained hospitalized in critical condition Sunday after an apparent explosion late Saturday at his home near Carbondale, said Osage County Sheriff Chris Wells.

Howey was a patient at the University of Kansas Medical Center at Kansas City, Kan., where he'd been taken by helicopter ambulance, Wells said.

Deputies were called shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday to to the scene at 11600 S. Indian Hills Road, where they arrived to find the house destroyed and on fire, Wells said.

The explosion's cause was being investigated by the sheriff's office and the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office, he said.
