Tinker Coffee hosting coffee competitions this weekend

Tinker Coffee Co.'s roastery will be the place for coffee lovers on Saturday, in particular.

That’s when the company will host three different coffeemaking and tasting competitors.

For the second year, the AeroPress U.S. AeroPress Coffee Brewing Championship will take place at the roastery, 1125 W. 16th St., Indianapolis.

The 10th annual event will have 18 competitors from across the U.S. brewing cups of coffee using an AeroPress coffee maker. Judges include 2021 U.S. AeroPress champion Hugo Cano, owner of Indianapolis' Amberson Coffee.

The winner gets to compete against about 60 people in the World AeroPress Championship final in December in Vancouver, Canada.

A party atmosphere will reign for the day with food and drink vendors, and live music by Fredrick Miller III.

The competitions bring interest to the Tinker brand and coffee in the Indianapolis area in general, said Tinker co-founder Stephen Hall.

“The biggest thing is that it highlights Indy as a pretty cool coffee city,” he said.

Also on Saturday, Tinker is hosting preliminary competitions for the U.S. Coffee Championships tasting and roasting contests.

The Cup Tasters competition tests sensory skills of 18 competitors. The roasting matchup has 11 people judged.

The events are open to the public, but the competition spots have been filled. No tickets are needed.

The U.S. Coffee Championships preliminaries run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., when finalists are announced. Competing roasters will be sampling their coffee for the audience from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The AeroPress competition starts at 2 p.m. with finalists being announced after the U.S. Coffee Championships results are in.
