Tinley Park names Thomas Tilton as interim police chief

The Tinley Park Police Department announced Friday that Thomas Tilton, the deputy police chief of administration, will take over as interim police chief, two weeks after former police Chief Matthew Walsh resigned from the top post.

Tilton has been with the department for two years, and an integral part of the force, Mayor Michael Glotz said in a statement.

“His professionalism and natural leadership abilities will help ensure the police department continues to operate efficiently while we search for a permanent Police Chief,” Glotz said.

Tilton worked at the U.S. Secret Service for 26 years including four years as an operator in the U.S. Secret Service’s elite Counter Assault Team, and was residence security coordinator for President Barack Obama.

“It’s an honor to serve such a great community,” Tilton said in the announcement. “This is a great place to live, and we’ll continue to work diligently to keep everyone safe and serve the residents of Tinley Park.”

He was not immediately available for comment. The announcement expressed confidence in Tilton, noting he worked to keep multiple events safe, including Tinley Park Ribfest.
