Few things are more relaxing than enjoying a warm summer night out on the patio, but if you're worried about mosquitoes buzzing around and ruining your whole evening, good news: There's a new little gadget that can help with that. Rather than spritzing bug sprays and lighting torches and citronella candles, the Radius Zone 2.0 from Thermacell is a no-spray, scentless and DEET-free alternative to keeping mosquitoes away from your outdoor space. Not only that, but it's tiny, portable, and TSA-compliant, so you can take it with you on all your outdoor getaways, too.
If you're wondering how a bug-spray-free gadget can protect you from mosquitoes, here's how it works: The Radius 2.0 runs on spill-proof metofluthrin (a chemical found in many mosquito repellents) cartridges that you put inside the device. When you turn it on, a heating element inside activates the repellent in the cartridge, and creates a scent-free protection zone against mosquitoes. The device charges via a USB cord, and all you have to do to use it once it's charged is press a button. One full charge, which takes about 5 hours, will give you 6.5 hours of protection. When in use, the Radius 2.0 will protect a 110-square-foot area from mosquitoes, and that protection starts within 15 minutes of turning on the device.
Worried that it's not as effective as your usual method of mosquito management? Rest assured knowing Popular Science named it one of the best recreation gear products of 2018. Just note that the Radius 2.0 is for outdoor use only, so don't use this inside your home.
When you order the Radius 2.0, it comes with a 12-hour refill, but you can also purchase refills (in 40-hour increments) on Amazon as well. The Radius 2.0 typically retails for $50, but thanks to Amazon Prime Day, you can score it in the blue colorway today and tomorrow (July 15 and 16) for $10 off (20 percent!). Refills are also 20 percent off of their usual $20 price, retailing for $16 now.
