LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Tippecanoe County Commissioners read out the 25 bids offered for the new to construction project relating to Greater Lafayette’s newest animal shelter on Monday.

In May 2022, the cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette and the Tippecanoe County government announced that they would be ending their contracts with Almost Home Humane Society and Crystal Creek Kennels, and instead opting to create a new and larger animal shelter to service all three communities, Humane Society for Greater Lafayette.

The new shelter will be located at 3150 Sagamore Parkway in Lafayette.

In order to fund the construction of this new shelter, the three governments contributed $6.5 million to the shelter and raised additional funds via community donations. The estimated overall budget of the project stands at around $7.8 million.

The commissioners hoped the specific cost of constructing the new animal shelter would total around $5.2 million.

The cheapest bid received on Monday was around $5.4 million.

The commissioners are still in the reviewing process phase of the project and may not go with the lowest bidder in a category. If a contractor doesn’t meet the standards that the county is expecting for this project, the commissioners may go with a higher bidder to ensure the project receives a quality contractor.

The commissioners also highlighted how they could potentially lower the cost of the project by adjusting certain aspects.

The commissioners will select the final bid at the next meeting, planned for April 3, 2023.
