LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Tippecanoe County Jail inmate Charles Aveline charged a jail officer late Monday as the officer helped pass medication, according to the sheriff's office.

When Aveline's single-person jail cell door opened so he could receive his medication just before 11 p.m. Monday, Aveline charged the jail deputy, grabbing him by the neck, according to the sheriff's office. The jail deputy pushed Aveline back into the cell, then restrained him on the floor until other deputies arrived to help, according to the sheriff's office.

Aveline, 41, of Lafayette, was not injured in the scuffle, according to the sheriff's office, and the jail deputy suffered scrapes and abrasions on his neck.

Aveline has been in the Tippecanoe County Jail since Feb. 10, when he was arrested on a warrant for a burglary case.

After the Monday night incident in the jail, officers added a preliminary charge of battery on a public safety official, according to online jail records.

He remained incarcerated Tuesday in his single-person cell, according to the sheriff's office.
