Tippecanoe County's COVID cases up 10.3%; Indiana cases surge 29.5%

New coronavirus cases leaped in Indiana in the week ending Sunday, rising 29.5% as 14,728 cases were reported. The previous week had 11,371 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Indiana ranked 31st among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 7.7% from the week before, with 862,778 cases reported. With 2.02% of the country's population, Indiana had 1.71% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 23 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Tippecanoe County reported 386 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 350 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 54,915 cases and 413 deaths.

White County reported 67 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 54 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 7,302 cases and 97 deaths.

Clinton County reported 64 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 47 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 9,667 cases and 133 deaths.

Carroll County reported 51 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 17 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 4,450 cases and 70 deaths.

Benton County reported 13 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 18 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 2,610 cases and 23 deaths.

Fountain County reported 44 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 38 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 5,771 cases and 105 deaths.

Within Indiana, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Scott County with 457 cases per 100,000 per week; Pike County with 428; and Cass County with 417. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Marion County, with 2,013 cases; Lake County, with 1,009 cases; and Allen County, with 919. Weekly case counts rose in 73 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Marion, Allen and Lake counties.

​ Across Indiana, cases fell in 18 counties, with the best declines in Wayne County, with 194 cases from 227 a week earlier; in Posey County, with 77 cases from 103; and in Dearborn County, with 78 cases from 100. ​

In Indiana, ​ 61 ​ people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 52 people were reported dead.

A total of 1,813,158 people in Indiana have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 24,061 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 90,410,386 people have tested positive and 1,026,951 people have died.

Indiana's COVID-19 hospital admissions rising

USA TODAY analyzed federal hospital data as of Sunday, July 24. Likely COVID patients admitted in the state:

  • Last week: 1,354

  • The week before that: 1,112

  • Four weeks ago: 1,009

Likely COVID patients admitted in the nation:

  • Last week: 75,961

  • The week before that: 70,927

  • Four weeks ago: 61,308

Hospitals in 33 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 33 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 38 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
