Tips to stay safe during Mardi Gras

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — While Mardi Gras is a time for fun and laughter, it is important to stay safe during the festivities.

Acadian Ambulance provides medical support and is on standby for Mardi Gras events.

Acadian’s public safety tips for Mardi Gras are as follows:

  • Never drink and drive. Make sure there is a designated driver in your group.

  • Stay hydrated as dehydration can impair your judgement.

  • Leave glass bottles at home.

  • Watch your step for curbs and uneven roads or sidewalks.

  • Make sure your child knows if a stranger tries to talk to them, to say “you’re not my parent,” and get away to find a uniformed police officer or medic.

  • Make it a point to stick with your group as parades/festivals get crowded quickly.

  • Plan out the route you’ll take with your group and what you’ll do if you get separated.

  • Secure a note in the pocket of each child with their name and the contact telephone number of a responsible adult in case the child becomes separated from your group.

  • If you lose track of a friend or child, ask a nearby police officer or medic for assistance.

  • Dress accordingly for the weather as temperatures can fluctuate.

  • Be aware of parade throws. Heavy flying beads can cause cuts or painful bruises, and beads on the ground can be a tripping hazard.

  • Don’t throw items back at floats.

  • Never cross over parade barricades to pick up a fallen throw. Ask a nearby police officer to pass it to you or grab it after the floats have passed.

  • Pay attention to all road closures and barricades for the safety of all pedestrians.

If you or someone near you experiences an injury or emergency, call 911 or find a nearby medic or first responder.

Have a happy and safe Mardi Gras holiday.
